Catalanotto was designated for assignment following the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Nationals Monday, Steve Popper of the Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Catalanotto has struggled as a pinch-hitter and with the Mets needing some pop off the bench, the team called up Chris Carter. If Catalanotto passes through waivers, he will either join Triple-A Buffalo or opt to retire.

The Brewers signed Catalanotto during the 2009 season to work as a left-handed bat off of the bench. He came through with a .278/.346/.382 line in 144 at-bats as a role player. Some team will sign him to play a similar role in 2010.
Catalanotto saw just 49 at-bats after August 1 with Texas turning to Chris Davis at first base, and there's little reason to think Catalanotto will play much in 2009 despite being in the last year of a multi-year deal. He could see occasional action in left field against right-handed pitching, but his value in even the deepest of leagues will be minimal at best.
A bicep injury limited Catalanotto early in the season, but his .260/.337/.444 line was on par with his previous campaigns minus the occasional single. After the All-Star break, his numbers (.288/.363/.476) helped salvage a terrible April (.140/.234/.333), and his poor road numbers (.222/.305/.317) should improve noticably in 2008. He's got two more years on his contract, but saw just 13 at-bats against lefties in 2007 and seems destined for a platoon role in 2008.
Catalanotto had another typical year in 2006, hitting .300 while drawing 50 walks and swatting 30 doubles. He was signed to a three-year deal by Texas, where he's expected to serve as the leadoff man following the departure of Gary Matthews Jr. to Anaheim. Limited to just 38 at-bats against left-handed pitching in 2006, he could see slightly more time for the Rangers for what figures to be a pretty pedestrian outfield.
Another typical season for Catalanotto. There's always a health risk here, but he provides a .300 average and 10 HR when he gets 450 AB. He'll likely be part of a platoon in left field.
Numerous leg-related injuries wiped out his 2004 season, but Toronto was quick to sign Frankie Cat for two more years. He'll split time between the outfield, DH and possibly some first base. He will get his 450 AB one way or another. Nagging injuries have been a problem in the past, but there's a 10 HR, .300 season in him if he's healthy.
His numbers returned to expected levels after an injury-filled 2002 season. He's a .300/15 HR guy in a good year, though his value takes a hit being eligible only in the outfield now. He'll be hitting in one of the top two spots in the Toronto order, depending on how well Reed Johnson handles everyday duty.
Rebounded nicely from an injury-filled year to post career highs in home runs (13), RBI (59), runs (83) and extra-base hits (53). He'll continue in his role as everyday right-fielder for Toronto.
