There's a chance the Devil Rays could promote Butler to the majors on Friday if Sean Burroughs (back) isn't ready to come off the DL by then.
ANALYSIS
If so, Butler would be an emergency option for the Rays. Butler, who's currently playing third base at Triple-A Durham for the Rays, is hitting just .211 (4-for-19) on the year. Even in deep, deep AL leagues, he wouldn't be much of an upgrade over what you currently have on your roster. If Butler is called up, it'd be because the Rays have literally no one else in their organization above Single-A with significant experience at third base.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
Butler is looking more and more like a Triple-A player and less like a starter with each season that passes. Formerly part of the Rockies' logjam in the middle of the infield, Butler is probably best suited as a platoon-type utility guy who has returned to the roost, as a former Cardinals prospect. He's never shown the ability to get on base, and seems best suited as a late-inning defensive replacement, though there are plenty of teams that would be willing to take a chance on a guy with a nearly .850 career OPS at Triple-A.
The starting second base job is his for now, but the Rockies brought in Pablo Ozuna in a trade from Florida to compete with him. Butler struggled to get on base at an acceptable rate last year (.298 OBP), a common trait among the Rockies in 2002.
