Bako signed a minor league deal with the Phillies after being released by the Cubs in spring training last season. He was called up to act as the backup catcher thanks to his strong defensive skills. His bat offers nothing for major league clubs or fantasy owners. Bako will likely be in camp with a club trying to earn a reserve job again this season.

Water finds its true level, and so did Bako after getting off to a good start in April. After hitting .310 in April, Bako slumped the rest of the season to hit .217/.299/.328. While he has a good defensive reputation, no amount of good defense behind the plate can justify him getting 299 at-bats in a season, as he did with the Reds in 2008. He'll be fortunate to land a backup role anywhere in 2009.

Bako hasn't ever hit over .272 and has homered just once in the past four seasons, but the 35-year-old backstop is making a nice career out of playing when younger and more-skilled catchers need a day off. The Orioles signed him to continue that job in 2007 and hope he's not beginning to break down - his past two seasons have included lengthy stays on the disabled list.

Bako will serve as the Royals backup catcher and provide veteran leadership for John Buck, but not much else.

Last season Bako was Greg Maddux's personal catcher. This season he'll share catching duties in Los Angeles with David Ross until Dioner Navarro is ready. He's not a fantasy factor.

Bako's 2003 (.229/.311/.330) was right in line with his career marks which makes him a bad hitting backup catcher who will turn 32 next June. The Cubs may decide to keep him for another year, and they may not -- either way, it's not your concern.

Coming off a .235/.295/.329 campaign, Bako will back up Damian Miller this season. There's no offensive upside whatsoever for the soon-to-be 31-year old catcher who has never hit more than four home runs in a season.
