Once a top prospect with the Rockies, Petrick told reporters that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease before the 2000 season. He said the disease didn't detract from his physical skills but added to his mental load. "I began to wonder if it was worth the time and medication," he said. "I felt it is time to step back and reorganize my life. I still love the game, but I don't love playing it as much. I have other things I want to do."
