The 37-year-old righty performed better than expected in 2005, going 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA and two saves. He threw the ball consistently in the low 90s and was the best arm out of the bullpen in May. Believing they can find a cheaper version of White in the offseason, the Pirates made no attempt to re-sign White, a free agent. He's a decent set-up man, but probably won't get too many save opportunities at this point in his career.
White, a career journeyman, was brought on to try to rebuild an Indians bullpen that was coming apart at the seams early in the season. After helping out with the unraveling, he's probably going to have to settle for a minor league deal and try to win a roster spot in spring training.
White gave up 11 homers in his 47.2 innings with the White Sox and burned bridges on his way out, yet White Sox GM Kenny Williams threatened a grievance against the Astros for the way in which they attempted to claim him off waivers. Besides that bizarre confluence of events, there was little noteworthy in White's season. He'll try to make the Dodgers' bullpen this spring.
After a horrendous campaign with the Rockies, White was released then later claimed by the Cardinals, for whom he posted a 14/3 K/BB ratio and a 0.82 ERA in 22 innings down the stretch. With the exception of the Colorado debacle, White has been a useful middle reliever since 2000. He should do a decent job in 2003, especially if he signs with a club with a pitcher-friendly home park.
