The Royals really like Dee Brown. He's a good soldier who is willing to do just about anything for the team. The problem he has faced in seven separate years in the majors is he's just not been good enough for the Royals to keep him around. At some point, you just have to decide it isn't all just bad luck, as the Royals decided this offseason when they released Brown.
Nagging injuries were a problem for Brown in 2003, another in a line of seasons where Brown didn't win a starting spot and disappointed. Still just 26, Brown is capable of a breakout year, but he hasn't done much with his chances thus far. He appears headed for a spare outfielder and pinch-hitting role, bouncing between Triple-A and the majors.
It's troublesome watching a player of Brown's talent get everything but an opportunity. To the Royals' credit, there's always been a player more deserving of the roster spot. Mark Quinn wrestled the job away in 2001. Last year, Raul Ibanez came in and took away Brown's left field job in the spring. Brown responded with a modest year in Triple-A (.275, 17 homers, 10 steals). If he could get healthy and hot in the spring, a job will open up.
