ANALYSIS
Choi was in the Devil Rays camp on a spring NRI, but did not make the team. It appears he has declined the assignment to Durham, and will either try to sign with another MLB team or return to his native Korea.

Choi played just 66 games last year, all at Triple-A, due to right knee and lower back problems. He has stalled at the plate after showing good power and plate discipline earlier in his career. Still, the Devil Rays don't have an incumbent at first base going into the spring, so Choi could be in the mix for at least a platoon role.Choi played just 66 games last year, all at Triple-A, due to right knee and lower back problems. No player better represents the schism between former Dodger GM Paul DePodesta and the local LA baseball media. DePodesta looked at Choi's strengths (good batting eye, power potential) and wanted him in the lineup more often. Others looked at Choi's weaknesses (high strikeouts, mediocre defense, perceived inability to hit lefties) and wanted him in the lineup less often. Ultimately, DePodesta's view was rejected, and the Dodgers have a new management team that will be less inclined to play Choi. On a more practical level, Nomar Garciaparra's arrival blocks Choi at first base.
Choi came to the Dodgers last season after being acquired in a deadline deal with the Marlins. He was expected to take over as the team's starting first baseman but struggled mightily and ended up playing only sporadically down the stretch. The Dodgers will likely end up spending money in other areas (third base and pitching) meaning Choi stands a chance to come out of spring training as the starter at first. He'll be worth grabbing in the late rounds of drafts since he still has potential given his command of the strike zone and power.
Choi's rookie year was derailed by a collision with Kerry Wood, as well as Dusty Baker's infatuation with players born before man walked on the moon. Jack McKeon has no problem with rugrats, however, so look for Choi to finally show what he can do. Like Derrek Lee before him though, the volume on his offense will be muted by his home park -- don't expect too much.
Choi, who went .286/.407/.513 at Triple-A last season before tearing up the Arizona Fall League, will open the 2003 season as the Cubs first baseman, the acquisition of Eric Karros, notwithstanding. The 6-5, 235 pound lefty could hit 30 home runs as a rookie, and his solid plate discipline - a 95/119 BB/K rate at Triple-A - should help protect him from extended slumps. A wrist injury sidetracked him in 2001, but he's completely healthy and should be one of the preseason favorites for NL Rookie of the Year.
