Hyzdu got a brief turn with Boston in 2004, but is just a spare part for the organization to use when needed. He'll be 33 by the time April rolls around, but can play all three OF positions, and could be in line for a job as the fifth outfielder now that Gabe Kapler will be playing in Japan. He has some power and could emerge as a serviceable platooner with the left-handed Trot Nixon in right field.
Hyzdu signed a minor league contract with Boston and may get a chance to compete for a role if the team decides it needs a right-handed bat off the bench. It's likely he'll start the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, but could find his way onto the roster depending on the number of pitchers the team carries.
Don’t let the .232 BA fool you — Hyzdu puts runs on the board with his bat. McClendon played him some in center field last year. Hyzdu puts runs on the board that way, too. His playing time depends entirely on whether the Pirates get a real center fielder (perhaps by committing to Tony Alvarez) or make due with Hyzdu and Rob Mackowiak. If he plays, he’ll hit.
