Valent has signed a one-year contract with the Rakuten Eagles of Japan's Pacific League, JapanBall.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Valent, who had been playing in Triple-A in the Padres' chain, signed for 50 million yen (about $447,000). One hopes Valent checked the Japanese standings and knew what he was getting into; the Eagles currently have a 12-34 record, by far the worst in Japan.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2005
2004
2003
Valent parlayed a spring training invite into a role as the Mets fourth outfielder and back-up first baseman. At times during the year, he was the team's best hitter, but the daily grind combined with inconsistent playing time resulted in him hitting just .226 over the last two months of the year. The number of at-bats Valent receives in 2005 is dependent on how the Mets rebuild their outfield in the offseason, but don't expect him to have 270 trips to the plate this season.
Valent has gone from being a former first-round (sandwich) pick by the Phillies in 1998, to being traded for Kelly Stinnett, to being outrighted off the Reds' 40-man roster. His last two seasons in Triple-A Scranton have been a disappointment, and his path back to the majors is by no means assured.
Valent, 25, hit .251 with nine homers, 84 RBI and 34 doubles in 545 at-bats at Triple-A Scranton. He can play a little first in addition to the outfield and if he can show any hitting prowess in spring training, he'll have a chance to stick with the club.
