The Brewers released Rivera on Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivera spent six of the last seven seasons in the Brewers organization, but that is not enough to earn him a job over either Martin Maldonado or Paul Phillips, who will share the catching duties for Triple-A Nashville.

Rivera hit .228/.326/.342 in 41 games as a backup catcher in 2009. He'll likely be used in the same capacity in 2010, though more playing time is a possibility if he secures a roster spot behind Jorge Posada after signing a minor league deal with the Yankees in December.
Rivera spent most of 2007 at Triple-A Nashville with a late season callup to Milwaukee. The Brewers will be looking for a backup catcher in 2008 and Rivera may get a chance to fill that need.
Rivera hit well enough at Triple-A Nashville that he forced his way to Milwaukee as a backup catcher. In Milwaukee, Rivera hit .265/.325/.458, which was more than adequate for a backup catcher. But the Brewers traded for Johnny Estrada this offseason and picked up Damian Miller's option, so Rivera may be the odd man out. The Brewers may try to trade Miller, opening the door Rivera to return in 2007.
Rivera's bat picked up after he escaped the Padres system, but he'll still be fighting with Jamie Burke for cups of coffee during Sandy Alomar's regularly scheduled maintenance checks. He may need one more change of scenery before he gets another real crack at the majors.
Rivera failed in his first brief major league trial, as he totally abandoned the patient approach that served him so well in the minors. He has decent power for a catcher though, and could be worth a nice endgame dollar in NL only leagues in 2003.
