Switzer was designated for assignment Wednesday, according to a Mets press release.
ANALYSIS
Switzer is expendable following the promotion of Pat Misch to serve as another lefty in the bullpen. If he clears waivers, look for him to report back to Triple-A Buffalo.

Switzer wound up replacing Trever Miller as the Rays' bullpen lefty last season, and as you can see by that ugly WHIP and wrong-way K:BB, he wasn't always effective. Still, unless the Rays find another lefty in the offseason, there aren't all that many organizational alternatives -- not that there's much fantasy impact in this role anyway.
Switzer came back from Tommy John surgery that cost him the entire 2004 season, but he forgot to bring his curveball with him, as he got cuffed around quite a bit in both the bigs and and Triple-A. He showed a lot of talent before his surgery, however, so he'll get another chance to prove he's healthy and effective this season, likely starting back at Triple-A. If he's ready to crack the big league rotation in 2007, the Rays will take it.
Switzer underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2004, and likely will see only a brief rehab appearance in the minors later this season before competing for a spot on the major league staff in 2006.
Switzer got knocked around a bit in his cup of coffee with Tampa Bay last year, but really, he was still a year away from being big-league-ready, at least. He'll be in the (large) group of candidates for spots in the Rays' bullpen, as well as the back end of the rotation, in 2004, but he'll likely start the year in Triple-A, and the time there won't hurt.
Switzer went 7-5, 4.27 in 20 starts for Single-A Bakersfield in 2002. In 103 innings, he struck out 129 batters (whoa!) while walking only 26. The Devil Rays will make sure he gets a regular turn in either their Double-A and/or Triple-A rotations in 2003. Still a year away from the bigs, at least, but he may be great keeper league material.
