Smith has little chance to be anything but a DH. He can't field a lick at third and doesn't run well enough to play the outfield, yet still manages to hit the ball well. Alas, there are just 14 DH spots in the majors, and since Smith hasn't ever lived up to his potential, his long-term future is very much in question.
Although Smith is expected to be part of the future plans of the Indians, it's hard to tell at this point where he will fit, following two mediocre seasons in a row. After a strong ending in 2003, Smith started well in Double-A Akron in 2004, but struggled in the middle of the season. The organization has approached him about moving from third base to the outfield, a move that he has resisted so far.
After blasting 29 doubles and 13 homers in high Single-A play in the Carolina League in 2002, Smith regressed a little in terms of power last season, hitting just nine homers at Double-A Akron. Still, he was just 21-years old then, and was able to cut down significantly on his strikeouts (going from 141 in 505 AB in 2002 to 99 in 473 AB in 2003). Still, the comparisons to Russell Branyan will be natural, with Smith coming up through the Indians' organization.
