Alfredo Amezaga

Amezaga has been amazingly consistent in his three seasons as the Marlins' supersub, maintaining a .260 or better average and an on-base percentage over .312. His dwindling steals mean his only fantasy value is as a midseason infield plug-in (once he inevitably picks up eligibility all over the diamond) but in real life there's something to be said for being a reliable as clockwork bench player.

Amezaga once again played every position but catcher for the Marlins in 2007, but will only qualify as an outfielder this season in most leagues and his only real asset in fantasy terms is a handful of stolen bases. If Florida can't find a real replacement at third base for Miguel Cabrera it could open up a starting job for Amezaga, but given his weak bat it's hard to imagine him holding onto it for long.

Although his 2006 numbers aren't terribly impressive Amezaga was huge off the bench for the Marlins, appearing in 132 games and emerging as a super-sub who could play credible defense at all three positions up the middle. He's got no power and isn't suited to be a starter, but his versatility means he should continue to get plenty of work, and fantasy owners can always find a use for players who qualify at three positions and steal 20 bases.

Amezaga has a slight chance to stick with the Rockies coming out of spring training. That's not to say Amezaga earned that privilege. He's only had one good season above Double-A, in 2003. When you look at his 2002 and 2004 numbers, 2003 really does look like a fluke. A reserve role is about all Amezaga can hope for, as his prospect star has rapidly faded.

Amezaga hit as expected at Triple-A before the call up, showing a good batting eye and gap power. In order to compete for the shortstop job this spring he'll need to show better plate discipline in winter ball -- he drew just nine walks in 205 at-bats with the Angels in 2003. While the future is bright for the youngster, the question is whether the success begins this season or next.

Amezaga saw limited action during a May callup, playing in 12 games and seeing 13 at-bats. However, he did have seven hits in those 13 at-bats, including two doubles, three runs scored, two RBI and one stolen base. At best, he is behind David Eckstein and Benji Gil on the depth chart with a good spring training.
