Last season was a wild ride for Durbin, who was on four different rosters before finishing most of the season with the Phillies. His first extensive exposure to the majors was a mixed bag as he was used in the bullpen and as a starter with mediocre results. While he strikes out a good number of batters, he'll need to improve his control (just a 40:37 K:BB ratio in the majors last year) to keep a big league job. The Phils need major league ready depth for their rotation and Durbin is one of three realistic internal candidates to pitch at the big league level early in the season if one of their five starters gets hurt or is ineffective. With a fastball that can top out over 95 mph, the former top prospect should get some turns in the rotation, or at least a bullpen job out of spring training.

After almost making the major league roster out of spring training in 2005, Durbin went into a mental and physical tailspin for that season and also had a bad 2006 spring training. He rebounded during the regular season by striking out nearly a batter per inning, but in July a nerve problem in his right biceps ended his season. With a fastball that can top out higher than 95 mph, the former top prospect could make the major league bullpen this spring, but his health remains a major question mark.

Durbin entered 2005 as Minnesota's top pitching prospect, but struggled at Triple-A after failing to make the big league roster and then missed a month with a sore shoulder. He possesses a fastball that can top out more than 95 mph, which before last season led to almost a strikeout per inning with good command. He posted a 3.25 ERA with a 21/8 K/BB ratio after returning in August, so last year's poor K/BB numbers may have been due to injury. While a subpar 2005 season has reduced the hype on Durbin, he's still seen as one of Minnesota's top pitching prospects and will have a chance to make the bullpen this spring.

Durbin is regarded as the top Twins pitching prospect and could contend for a job in the rotation this spring. There were reports he hit 100 mph on the radar gun in the Arizona Fall League last fall. While the Twins organization later said they think those readings were in error, he possesses a fastball that can top out more than 95 mph. As a result, he's posted strong minor league strikeout numbers with good command (91/38 K/BB ratio at two levels last year). Many scouts feel he's more dominant the first time through the order. As a result, he might make an excellent closer candidate down the road. In either case, he's someone to grab late in your draft as he could make a fantasy impact in 2005.

Durbin has risen to the upper tier of pitching prospects in the Minnesota system and could compete for a bullpen job with the big league club this spring. Durbin's numbers were not as impressive last season when he moved to Double-A (70 strikeouts and 29 walks in 94.2 innings), but he was young for that level. He also erased previous durability concerns last season. He's likely more of a roto factor in 2005, but he's someone to put on your minor league reserve roster.

Durbin was exceptional in his first year in a full-season league - most notable has been his ability to remain healthy, something he could not do in rookie ball in 2000-01. He could come quickly. The improvement of his command has been impressive, though further development of his off-speed stuff will be necessary for him to remain a top-starting prospect at upper minor league levels.
