Simpson throws extremely hard, but has little command of his blazing fastball. The end result is high strikeout and walk numbers at Triple-A, with subsequent thrashings whenever he faces major league hitting. He'll keep getting chances because of his fastball, but don't let it occur simultaneously on your fantasy roster.
Simpson was nothing special in 2004 out of the Rockies pen as a middle reliever. Walks have been a problem throughout his minor league career, and his 20 free passes in 39 IP with the Rockies won't cut it at Coors or on your fantasy team.
Simpson is a candidate to land in the Rockies bullpen this season, following a December trade from the Mariners for Chris Buglovsky. Simpson had an unimpressive 4.16 ERA in 43 appearances for Triple-A Tacoma last year. The Rockies are cutting corners financially, starting in the bullpen, so Simpson has an outside chance of making the 40-man roster.
