ANALYSIS
Houlton led NPB with 19 wins and had a 2.19 ERA with a 121:36 K:BB ratio in 172.1 innings while leading Softbank to the Japan series title. He would have been an intriguing pitcher to watch if he had returned to MLB, but it looks like he'll stay in Japan for the near future.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2008
2007
2006
A former Rule 5 pick out of the Astros organization, Houlton spent most of the year in Triple-A Las Vegas, posting a fine 3.65 ERA in 24 games in a hitter's paradise. He had a pair of stints with the Dodgers in 2007, pitching 18 games in relief with average results. We could have seen him replacing Mark Hendrickson as the team's long reliever / swingman, but he'll plan in Japan in 2008.
A former Rule 5 selection from Houston, Houlton spent 2006 in Triple-A, and while a 5.60 ERA can be partially explained by the Las Vegas park factor, Houlton did nothing to suggest that the organization should consider him in its future plans. Likely heading back to Triple-A with perhaps the occasional spot start should his minor league performance warrant as such.
Houlton held his own for a while as a Rule 5 pick from the Astros organization, eventually earning a spot in the starting rotation after a few injuries. He's unlikely to keep his spot in the rotation in 2006, especially now that the Dodgers no longer have the pressure of keeping him in the majors or be forced to offer him back to the Astros.

After a lackluster 2008 (4.27 era in 84.1 ip) in the SoftBank Hawks bullpen, Houlton is having a good year in the Hawks rotation. Through seven starts he's 2-3 with a 2.20 era in 49 innings.
