ANALYSIS
The former first-round pick of the Rangers has worked mostly as a starter in his minor league career but has struggled with his control this season and throughout many of his stops in the past. Perhaps moving into a relief role would get his career back on track, and it's likely that his propensity for missing bats will lead another club to take a chance on him.

Diamond saw some work in the Cubs rotation down the stretch and after a good start (10 K, 3 BB) against the Brewers, got knocked around. Diamond struck out nearly a batter an inning at Triple-A, but his command was inconsistent. At age 27, he's not really a prospect anymore, but has a chance to be in the back-of-the-rotation mix with a strong spring.
There were control questions even before Diamond underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2007, and his return to the mound in 2008 wasn't much different before he was sidelined in early August with bone spurs in his ankle. He doesn't throw near enough strikes to remain a starter for much longer, and his poor control and flyball tendencies are a poor fit for sustained success out of the bullpen. The 10th-overall pick in the 2004 draft can be safely be considered a bust.
Diamond missed the entire 2007 season after tearing an elbow ligament in March and undergoing Tommy John surgery. Given Diamond's control issues when healthy (160 walks in 325.2 career minor league innings), there could be major stumbling blocks upon his initial return. The surgery will likely hasten his move to the bullpen as well.
There's still a lot questions surrounding Diamond's performance. He continues to struggle with his control (78 walks) despite impressive strikeout totals (145 Ks in 129.1 innings at Double-A Frisco). A year spent in Triple-A Oklahoma City seems a given, and an eventual move to the bullpen seems inevitable. He could have a nice future as a closer.
Diamond dominated the California League to earn a promotion and pitched well at Double-A Frisco despite a bloated 5.35 ERA. Walks haven't been a big issue in the past, so expect his control to improve in 2006. He's the Rangers' best upper-level pitching prospect, and could make his major league debut in the second half if he pitches well.
So far, so good for the first-rounder out of the June 2004 draft. Diamond handled the promotion to low Single-A Clinton, posting an excellent 42/8 K/BB ratio in 30.2 IP while allowing just 18 hits. He's yet to pass the Double-A litmus test, but keep an eye on him.
The University of New Orleans product throws in the mid 90s and can do so deep into games. At 6-2, 230 pounds, he projects as a horse if he can develop his secondary pitches.
