Huber was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, ending any shot he had at landing a bullpen job.
ANALYSIS
Huber was hoping for a middle-relief spot, but it was a long shot. He'll likely be up at some point, though.

Huber bounced between Seattle and Triple-A last season before a June elbow injury sidelined him for three months. He returned for four appearances in late September, and his elbow held up. In 25 appearances between Seattle and Triple-A, Huber had 36 strikeouts to 13 walks. He has two plus breaking balls, a slider and curveball, and locates his fastball between 90 and 94 mph. He'll compete for a middle-relief role in spring training.
Huber was converted from a starter to a reliever before last season and notched 23 saves between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tacoma. He combined for 57 strikeouts and 14 walks in 65.3 innings before a call-up to Seattle. Huber has two plus breaking balls, a slider and curveball, and locates his fastball between 90 mph and 94 mph. He'll likely grab one of the open spots in the Mariners bullpen in spring training and could fill the righty set-up role with Rafael Soriano traded and Mark Lowe injured.
Huber is a decent prospect, though not one that has stardom tattooed on his forehead. He might forge a major league career from the bullpen or the back-end of a rotation, but that's his ceiling until he proves otherwise. In 26 starts for Double-A San Antonio last season, he posted a 112/49 K/BB ratio. Huber has two plus breaking balls, his slider and curveball, and locates his fastball between 90 mph and 94 mph.
