May 27, 2016
Tolleson signed a minor league contract with Kansas City, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tolleson was released by the Orioles last week, and the 32-year-old will report to Triple-A Omaha. Tolleson has experience playing at second base, third base, shortstop and the corner outfield spots, so he could give Kansas City some much-needed depth following Mike Moustakas' season-ending injury. Tolleson is a career .245/.299/.372 hitter at the MLB level.

Toronto was forced to give the then 30-year-old infielder nearly 200 plate appearances due to a rash of injuries to their infield last season. He hit just above the league batting average, but it was an empty average as he didn’t show much pop and struck out four times for each time he drew a walk. Those numbers mirrored what the journeyman minor leaguer has done throughout a 10-year minor league career for seven organizations. Bully on him for finally making it to the major leagues and sticking with it, but from a fantasy standpoint, there’s very little to like.
Tolleson shuttled back and forth between Baltimore and Triple-A and was never anything but a backup in the organization. He refused a minor league assignment and joined the White Sox after the season. Tolleson has rifled off some pedestrian numbers even by minor league standards and he hit groundballs in 52.8 percent of his at-bats in 2012, generating just a 11.3 percent rate for line drives. The White Sox should sign some other experienced players to compete with Tolleson for a utlity infield spot in spring training.
Tolleson had a nice year at Triple-A Sacramento, hitting .332/.412/.503 and flashing more power than in the past. That's hardly unexpected for a 26-year-old in his sixth professional season, and we'd need to see a repeat performance before we can begin to project him as a possible utility infielder with some upside.
Tolleson had a breakout season at Double-A in 2008, but didn't show the same power at Double-A and Triple-A in 2009. He has a good eye at the plate, but he'll need to return to his 2008 form to get consideration for more than a temporary utility role in the majors.
Tolleson was a lightly-regarded 2005 fifth-round pick but had a breakout season at Double-A and an impressive Arizona Fall League showing (hitting .383/.449/.543 with seven stolen bases). He's always had a good eye at the plate, so his breakout may be for real. He could be a sleeper in 2009 given Minnesota's lack of depth on the left side of the infield.
