Buck signed a minor league contract with the Padres on Monday, U-T San Diego reports.
ANALYSIS
Buck was limited to only 35 games last season with Triple-A Tucson and did not make any appearances in the major leagues. Over that stretch, he hit .256/.296/.464 with five home runs and 26 RBI. He will provide some outfield depth in the Padres' organization in 2014.

Buck bounced around between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus as the team dealt with myriad injuries to its outfield, but he didn't do anything to distinguish himself when he played, hitting .228/.275/.342 in 149 at-bats for the Indians. His ability to handle all three outfield positions gives him a chance to land a reserve role after signing a minor league deal with the Astros. To this point, the success he's had in the minors has never really translated against big league pitching, but Houston will provide a reasonably clear path to an Opening Day roster spot if he hits well during spring training.
Agreed to a minor league deal with the Astros in November 2011.
Buck again struggled with injuries throughout the season, limited to less than 40 games for the second straight season after a promising debut in 2007. He's likely missed too much time to develop into the player that the A's had hoped he'd become, and they didn't seem interested in giving him an extended look when he was healthy last season anyway. He'll be in the outfield mix come spring, but until he's able to shake the injury bug, Buck's upside will be limited.
Buck did little to buck the durability questions surrounding his rookie season as he missed lengthy periods of time due to shin splints, a concussion and vertigo. He re-emerged in September, hitting .367 and swatting four home runs, and will be a top-of-the-order presence to start the 2009 season. There's a decent season hidden amongst the injuries if he can stay healthy.
Buck battled all sorts of injuries in his rookie season, but should be healthy to start spring training. Almost all of his power output came in May (.685 slugging), and he hadn't shown much power in his brief pro career either. He has the ability to draw a walk and steal the occasional base, but questions about his power and durability are pretty major marks against him.
Buck had a nice year in his first full professional season, reaching Double-A and hitting .302/.376/.472 in 212 at-bats. The 23-year old figures to spend the bulk of the year at Triple-A Sacramento. There's some question if he'll hit for much power, but he can get on base and steal an occasional base.
