The Rockies' Triple-A affiliate has added Birkins to the roster, insidetherockies.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Birkins showed minute signs of life last year for Tampa Bay, allowing just one run on five hits through 10 innings, striking out seven. If all goes smoothly in the minors, he's a strong candidate to join the club in September, if not sooner.

While the left-handed Birkins did put up some ugly numbers in less than 35 innings with the Orioles in 2007, he was somewhat effective in 19 Triple-A starts with a great strikeout rate. And, did we mention he's a lefty? The Rays likely will give Birkins a chance to claim a major league roster spot in the spring, either at the back of the rotation or in long relief.

Birkins, a soft-tossing 26-year-old lefty, made his major league debut in 2006 and managed to fool major league hitters by allowing only one earned run and three hits in 14 innings in May. After that, the league caught up with Birkins and torched him for an 8.81 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in June and July before his season was derailed due to elbow tenderness. He'll compete with John Parrish and Brian Burres to be the second lefty behind Jamie Walker in the bullpen, but don't expect much out of Birkins even if he makes the team.
