Redmond moved to full-time relief work in 2014 and turned in his best season in the big leagues yet. There was some buzz about him as a deep-league sleeper if the Jays had kept him in the rotation, but the lack of a quality third pitch ultimately led the team to use him as a reliever. Even with the role change, Redmond had his share of struggles against lefties, who hit .282/.379/.443 against him. Against righties, Redmond should be a viable option for the middle innings, as he carried a 20.6% strikeout rate and 6.1% walk rate against righties a year ago. Look for his value to the Blue Jays to exceed his value to fantasy owners again in 2015.
Injuries forced Redmond into the Toronto rotation in 2013, and he pitched surprisingly well. His middling 4.32 ERA was a result of problems with the long ball, as Redmond posted an 8.9 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9, while benefiting from a high strand rate (75.5% LOB). The home run issues aren't exactly surprising given that Redmond has always been known as a flyball pitcher. While the AL East probably isn't a great fit for a pitcher of his ilk, Redmond may be a candidate for the 2014 rotation. If he wins a spot, he'll likely fare well in terms of strikeouts and WHIP, if not ERA.
Redmond gets lost amid the plethora of marque pitching prospects in Atlanta's system, but he continues to post strong minor league numbers. He had a 2.92 ERA and 142:47 K:BB ratio in 169.2 innings last season at Triple-A Gwinnett. He may not get a shot to win a rotation spot with Atlanta, but even at age 27 he could surprise if injuries strike or if he's traded to another organization.
Redmond had a breakout season at Double-A Mississippi after the Braves acquired him in the spring from Pittsburgh. His excellent control stands out, but his stuff is average and he's pretty hittable most of the time, relying on good defense behind him. Still, a strong start at Triple-A could make him a candidate for the major league rotation later in 2009.
