The Tigers have signed Dlugach to a minor league contract, Dlugach announced on Twitter Friday.

ANALYSIS
Dlugach's only time in the bigs came in 2009, when he played in just five games for Detroit. The Tigers then traded him to the Red Sox in 2010. In 2011, he batted .222 and hit six home runs in 63 games for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. It's unlikely that he'll reach the big league level in 2012.

The Red Sox acquired Dlugach from the Tigers in November for a player to be named. Dlugach took a step back in 2010, hitting .258/.303/.360 with six homers and 41 RBI in 450 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo. He once again struggled with his plate discipline, striking out 149 times while drawing just 25 free passes. The 28-year-old shortstop has an adequate glove to be a defensive replacement at the major league level, but his lackluster production at the plate will likely keep him from ever claiming a role large enough to make a fantasy impact.

The 27-year-old shortstop played his first full season in Triple-A last year, hitting .294/.349/.446 in 466 at-bats. His biggest struggle at the plate continued to be his propensity to swing and miss, resulting in 137 strikeouts. Despite the obvious holes in his offensive game, the Tigers are considering Dlugach a fallback option should the team fail to bring in a veteran shortstop this offseason. Dlugach should be able to hold his own with the glove, but he’ll have struggles at the plate until he develops better strike-zone judgment.
