ANALYSIS
Burgess has always had plus-power, but still strikes out a bit too much. Nevertheless, perhaps a change of scenery will elevate his status, as he was traded to the Cubs in the offseason.

Burgess continued his steady progress through the Nationals system, improving his plate discipline in a second stint at High-A before a very impressive cup of coffee at Double-A to end the season. He'll always be prone to strikeouts and he hasn't yet hit enough home runs to justify the whiffs, but the 22-year-old still has time to put the pieces together. With Jayson Werth now ahead of him in right field and Bryce Harper behind him, though, his window to establish himself in Washington is suddenly very small.
Burgess took a step backward in 2009 at High-A, but while his power production slipped he did walk a little more and strike out a little less, so there were at least some signs of skill growth. At 21 and with big-time potential, the Nationals will be very patient with him, but it would still be nice to see him hit for a decent batting average one of these years.
Striking out more than once every three at-bats is not a formula for sustained success, but Burgess' youth and power will keep him in the Nationals' future plans for a while yet. It's far too early to give up on him, but some development this season as a 20-year-old would be nice.
Burgess regained the power stroke he'd lost as a high school senior and put together a great Rookie league debut, displaying some patience along with his pop. The Nationals system is starved for talent, so a similarly potent full season debut in 2008 will send him soaring up the organizational depth chart, and up prospect lists.
