Huntzinger signed a minor league contract with the Rockies on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training.
ANALYSIS
Huntzinger spent the last three seasons at the Triple-A level, and last season definitely wasn't promising, either. He posted a 4.63 ERA in 56.1 innings pitched, meaning he'll have to vastly improve if he wants a chance to pitch with the Rockies after spring training.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2010
Huntzinger, 22, has experienced a slow and steady rise through the Red Sox' system, though his stuff will be tested at Double-A. His fastball sits in the low-90s and he needs to command it, working the corners, to be successful. Hitters create a lot of contact against him. He also needs to develop a slider, so he isn't relying as much on the heater. Maintaining velocity over the game may be a problem as he advances, so a move to the bullpen is not out of the question.
After the Red Sox organization tweaked his mechanics in 2008, Huntzinger lost some zip on his fastball, with the pitch now living in the low 90s after he hit 95 mph in high school. They feel the velocity can come back, but until then it's imperative that he live down in the zone. That's something he did in 2009 as his HR rate dropped significantly. He's got a nice slider and is developing a changeup, so the organization views him as a starter down the road. Consistency with his slider, further development of the changeup, and added velocity on the fastball are seen as his greatest needs.

Huntzinger has retired all six batters he has faced this spring, including three strikeouts and a save in Tuesday's spring training game and he impressed manager Buck Showalter, according to MASN Sports. "That's why we liked him in the offseason," Showalter said. "He's athletic, fills up the strike zone, comes after people. I like what I see so far.
