Closer Watch

San Francisco – With Brian Wilson likely done for the season, Sergio Romo may seem like the front-runner for save opportunities in San Francisco, but skipper Bruce Bochy apparently plans to use a committee of sorts to close out games. This means 31-year-old Santiago Casilla and 34-year-old Javier Lopez could be line for some saves, if Bochy keeps his word. Casilla posted a skinny 1.74 ERA over 51.2 big league innings last year, while Lopez has only one save since 2007.

Baltimore – Jim Johnson recorded his fourth save of the young season Saturday, as the Orioles beat the Blue Jays 6-4. It's certainly early, but it's beginning to look like the Orioles might have enough offense to provide Johnson with a significant number of save opportunities. Meanwhile, the man who was battling Johnson for the closer role this spring, Matt Lindstrom, has been dealing with back tightness recently and doesn't appear to be any threat to steal save opportunities in the near future.

Recommended Pickup

Santiago Casilla, P, SF – While Sergio Romo looks likely to get the bulk of save opportunities going forward, he only has three career major-league saves under his belt. Casilla, on the other hand, saved six games for the Giants in 2011, and was warming up while Brian Wilson struggled to close out the Rockies on Thursday. Romo seems to have better command of his pitches, having struck out an impressive 70 batters against just five walks last season, while Casilla struck out 45 against 25 walks. It may simply be a case where the Giants are more comfortable with Romo in a setup role.
