Closer Watch

St. Louis - Edward Mujica was called upon to record the final four outs in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Phillies on Thursday night. Previous hints from manager Mike Matheny suggested that Mujica might be the team's new closer, and this is certainly a step in that direction. Mujica is carrying a 7:1 K:BB over 6.1 innings with the Cardinals this season after recording similarly impressive numbers last season after being acquired from Miami (1.03 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 21:3 K:BB in 26.1 innings). Trevor Rosenthal was used for the first two outs in the eighth inning Thursday, and may be the next in line should Mujica falter with his chance to work the ninth in St. Louis.

Recommended Pickup

Dee Gordon, SS, LAD - For those in deeper formats, Gordon could be on the brink of a promotion back to Los Angeles as he's been able start the season strong at Triple-A Albuquerque with a .319/.385/.468 line through 11 games while going 8-for-9 as a basestealer. Perhaps the biggest number to keep an eye with the young shortstop is his walk rate, which has jumped to 9.6% early on after topping out at 6.3% with the Isotopes last season. Exhibiting an improved combination of plate discipline and contact skills, Gordon could potentially emerge as a viable candidate to eventually bump Hanley Ramirez over to third base this season, while providing a steady supply of stolen bases that would make him a useful asset in many formats. Meanwhile in Los Angeles, Luis Cruz has opened the season in a 4-for-40 slump along with his typically low walk rate 2.3%.
