Closer Watch

Angels:Ernesto Frieri entered the game Thursday against the Royals with a three-run lead and a chance at a save. He struggled to record two outs giving up three hits and two earned runs and also had one walk before being lifted after throwing 35 pitches. Robert Coello came in to record the final out of the game and earned the save. Frieri is still relatively safe as the primary closer until Ryan Madson returns from the disabled list. Scott Downs or Garrett Richards would more likely be the next in line to see save chances should Frieri falter late in the game.

Kevin Gausman, SP, BAL - Gausman made his major league debut on Thursday against the Blue Jays less than a year after being selected fourth overall out of LSU and it was not picture perfect after he allowed four earned runs in five innings and took the loss. Though the numbers were a little rough in his first start, he lit up the radar gun with his fastball touching the upper 90s consistently. He works a solid fastball-changeup combo mixed with a curve and slider that gives him a chance to stick around in the majors if he can locate well. He threw the changeup 16.9 percent of the time in his debut which is unique for a power-arm pitcher. The Orioles have a lot of arms that can start but none are as skilled as Gausman and he could be a solid pickup should he stay at the major league level.
