Closer Watch

Rangers: After reports surfaced Sunday that the Rangers would shop Joe Nathan for some offensive help, GM Jon Daniels said Monday that he does not expect to trade his closer. Nathan has been typically impressive this season, but with none of the National League contenders seemingly in need of a lockdown closer, it seems unlikely Nathan would fetch the kind of return that the Rangers would be comfortable accepting.

Rockies:Rafael Betancourt, currently on the disabled list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy, has only recently begun playing catch but isn't expected to begin a rehab assignment until the Rockies return from their road trip August 9. As a result of Betancourt's slow recovery progress, Rex Brothers figures to retain closing duties until at least mid-August. There has been some talk that the Rockies could move Betancourt before the trade deadline, but because of his uncertain health, any sort of deal is unlikely to happen.

Recommended Pickup

Andre Rienzo, SP, CWS – Much like Dan Straily last season for the Athletics, Rienzo is a relatively unheralded prospect that has made waves in the high minors for his high strikeout totals. Rienzo's most recent start at Triple-A Charlotte was probably his most acclaimed, as the 24-year-old struck out 11 batters in a seven-inning no-hitter. Rienzo was officially called up to start Tuesday after Jake Peavy was scratched, and with the growing likelihood that Peavy will be dealt before Wednesday's trade deadline, Rienzo will likely have a chance to retain a rotation spot with the White Sox the rest of the season. Since he's somewhat older for a prospect making his major league debut and doesn't possess much of a pedigree, it's probably best to ignore him in most mixed leagues for now, but he could become a sneaky addition in AL-only formats.
