Closer Watch

San Diego Padres - Rumors began swirling Friday around Huston Street, with ESPN's Jim Bowden reporting that the Padres are close to trading him to the Angels. If it actually materializes, it will likely leave Joe Smith out in the cold, as Street is one of the most dominant end-gamers in all of baseball and would almost certainly inherit the job immediately upon arrival. Smith has been outstanding this season (2.32 ERA, 0.89 WHIP), and especially lately -- he hadn't given up a hit in his last 10 appearances coming into Friday's action -- but the Angels seem intent on getting a more prototypical ninth-inning guy in the role. Meanwhile, in San Diego, Street's departure would open the door for Joaquin Benoit to step into the closer role, but that may not last long, since the team could end up trading him as well. Dale Thayer has fared very well this year (2.17 ERA, 8.7 K/9) and would likely be the next man up, with Alex Torres possibly seeing opportunities depending on the matchups.

Recommended Pickup
Travis d'Arnaud, C, NYM - On June 7, d'Arnaud was batting .180/.271/.273 with a mere six extra-base hits, and the Mets decided it was best he head to Triple-A Las Vegas to iron out his issues. The 25-year-old quickly earned the call back, and he went on to finish the first half by going 18-for-61 (.295 average) with three homers, five doubles and 10 RBI in 16 games. Manager Terry Collins moved d'Arnaud up to the No. 5 spot in the order for his final three games before the break, and he was again there for Friday's second-half opener. It's somewhat easy to forget that d'Arnaud was widely considered one of the top catching prospects in the game before he got off to such a miserable start to his major league career, but he's finally beginning to remind people of his promise. The job of everyday catcher for the Mets is his, and he should remain in the five-hole so long as he continues to drive the ball with authority.
