DraftKings MLB: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Dallas Keuchel, HOU at MIL ($10,300): Keuchel got his season off to a fine start against the potent Yankees lineup last Tuesday, allowing just three hits and two earned runs over seven innings while whiffing five. While the Brewers certainly have some power in their lineup, they also have strikeout-prone sluggers such as Chris Carter and Ryan Braun in the heart of the order. They've averaged just three runs per game over the first five of the season, and have already struck out 48 times in 156 at-bats. Miller Park is certainly known for its hitter-friendly confines, but Keuchel has the control to neutralize the Brewers and stands a good chance at a victory with his teammates facing off against the vulnerable Jimmy Nelson.

Jose Quintana, CWS vs. CLE ($8,900): Quintana demonstrated again last season why he's one of the better young arms in baseball, and he put together a solid outing in his first start of this year. The 27-year-old will face off against the Indians in frigid conditions that won't exactly be favorable for offense, and he's already proven highly proficient at keeping the ball in the park. For what it's worth, Quintana also dominated Cleveland in 2015, sporting a 2-1 record and sparkling 0.82 ERA against them, his best figure in that category against any team.

CATCHER

Francisco Cervelli, PIT at CIN ($3,400): The offensively-proficient backstop has started off 2016 well, getting on base in all five games, including a 3-for-3 performance versus the Reds on Saturday. He managed an excellent .332 wOBA versus right-handed pitching last year and is already tallying an absurd .456 wOBA and .389 average against that handedness over 22 plate appearances. To top it off, he'll face off against rookie Tim Melville, who'll be making his first major league start and hasn't shown any indication of being an overpowering pitcher at any stretch during his minor league career.

FIRST BASE

Mitch Moreland, TEX at LAA ($3,700): Moreland's slow start will likely drive the masses off of him Sunday, but the slugger always seems to be just one good swing away against right-handed pitching from breaking out of any slump. While he's hit in four straight games, Moreland has yet to go yard in the new season, and he is only slashing .200/.238/.300. Those numbers could receive an appreciable boost Sunday when he'll take aim at the velocity-challenged and long-ball prone Jered Weaver. The veteran righty was touched up for a jaw-dropping 51 homers over the last two seasons, and Moreland has knocked two of Weaver's offerings out of the park himself during his career. The Rangers slugger also posted a scorching .372 wOBA and launched 18 homers against right-handers in 2015, and given Weaver's smoke-and-mirrors act on the mound at this stage of his career, Moreland could have a good chance of breaking the long ball ice.

SECOND BASE

Brock Holt, BOS at TOR ($3,300): Holt tallied 27 and 23 fantasy points in the two games prior to Saturday, and he then extended his season-opening hitting streak to four games with a double against the Blue Jays. He's managed an absurd .412/.444/.882 slash line through the early going and draws more of the right-handed pitching that he's already been mashing this season. Holt has generated a .467 average and .614 wOBA against righties over 15 plate appearances this season, numbers that are undeniably impressive even when factoring in the small sample size. He's also proven his mettle at the big league level in the previous two seasons, so his success is much more likely to be a sign of a significant improvement as opposed to a mirage.

THIRD BASE

Luis Valbuena, HOU at MIL ($3,700): The Astros slugger is still looking for his first homer of the season, and he draws a matchup Sunday that could help end the drought. Jimmy Nelson surrendered 18 home runs last season in 177 innings, and he already fell victim to the long ball once in his first start of the season. Left-handed hitters also touched up Nelson to the tune of a .375 wOBA in 2015, and he surrendered 11 of his home runs to hitters of that handedness. Meanwhile, Valbuena hit 20 of his 25 home runs against southpaws last season, touching them up for a .348 wOBA overall. Add in the hitter-friendly Miller Park, where Nelson surrendered 12 of his gopher balls last season, and you have a recipe for potentially explosive fantasy production.

SHORTSTOP

Eugenio Suarez, PIT at CIN ($3,800): All Suarez has done so far in the new season is knock the cover off the ball, and provide fantasy production in virtually every category. He's got three homers in his last four games, and has already tallied eight RBI. His power surge and three multi-hit games have netted double-digit fantasy points in four of his first five games. Jeff Locke proved to be somewhat of a reverse-splits pitcher in 2015 in that the wOBA he surrendered to right-handed hitters (.312) actually checked in notably lower than the one he gave up to lefties (.347), but 10 of the 15 homers he gave up on the season were to righties. Meanwhile, Suarez pounded southpaws to the tune of a .354 wOBA and .193 ISO over 90 plate appearances in 2015.

OUTFIELD

Preston Tucker, HOU at MIL ($3,400): Like his teammate Valbuena, Tucker draws the home-run prone Jimmy Nelson in Miller Park. Like Valbuena, he also hits from the left side of the plate that gave Nelson nightmares in 2015. Tucker mashed righties in his first major league season, amassing a .347 wOBA and collecting all 13 of his homers against them. He's got a four-game hitting streak to start the season and should be in the lineup Sunday against Nelson after sitting out Saturday.

Eduardo Escobar, MIN at KC ($3,100): Escobar produced yet again Saturday but continues to be modestly priced. After tallying another two hits, he's slashing .444/.474/.667 through the first five games, including at least one hit in every game. The switch-hitting Escobar posted a .321 wOBA versus righties last season and is certainly swinging a hot enough bat to make waves against the average arm of Edison Volquez.

Melvin Upton Jr., SD at COL ($3,900): Upton's bat has come alive the last two games at Coors Field, as he's posted four hits, including a home run, and two RBI, two walks and two runs scored over that span. Sunday, he draws the highly vulnerable Chad Bettis, who right-handers crushed in 2015. Bettis surrendered a .345 wOBA and seven homers to righties last season, while also giving up a .302 average and 4.99 ERA in the thin air of his home park. He got 2016 off to a rough start as well, as the Diamondbacks touched him up for seven hits and five runs in just over five innings. With a crack at a mediocre pitcher in hitter-friendly confines, Upton's bat could continue its resurgence.
