FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Jose Quintana, CWS at TAM ($8,300): I'm not particularly enamored with any of the top-priced pitchers, which makes it a perfect slate to save a few bucks and play a matchup. Though the Rays had five runs and counting when I started writing this Saturday, they'd been shut out in their previous two games and entered Saturday having scored only 24 runs on the year, the second-lowest total in baseball, while striking out at a 26.2 percent clip. Quintana hasn't been able to work into the seventh inning yet this year, but he's fanned 12 in 11.2 innings and could shut down the struggling Tampa lineup.

Jon Lester ($10,500) is likely my favorite if I'm paying up for pitching Sunday, while Steven Matz ($7,700) looks like he could be another gamble worth taking.

Catcher

Stephen Vogt, OAK vs. KAN ($2,700): Sometimes, riding the hot hand is the right course of action. Vogt is 7-of-12 with two home runs and four RBI in the first three games of this series against Kansas City. He's never faced Sunday's starter, Kris Medlen, who walked four and struck out seven in his first start this season.

First Base

Brandon Moss, STL vs. CIN: ($3,200): I wrote this column by jumping around position to position, and Moss was the last player to find his way here. That disclaimer was needed since he's the first Cardinal here going down the position list. The more I looked at this slate, the better I felt about stacking Cardinal bats, especially second-tier bats that may come at a discount. Moss has homered in three of four and four of six, and his left-handed bat should be in the lineup against righty Jon Moscot. Moss owns a wOBP of .469 to go along with a .588 ISO against right-handers.

Second Base

Dustin Pedroia, BOS vs. TOR ($2,900): Pedroia quietly brings an 11-game hitting streak into Sunday's contest, a streak that began in the second game of the year. He's made nine fantasy points in three straight and four of his last five, and has reached base in five of his 11 career plate appearances against Sunday's starter, Aaron Sanchez.

Third Base

Manny Machado, BAL at TEX ($4,500): Machado isn't cheap, but there are still three higher-priced options at the hot corner, making him a slight bargain. He's hit safely in every game this season, owning a .405 batting average and .500 wOBP entering Saturday, giving him a safe floor. He's never hit a home run at the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park in Arlington, and has failed to go long in six straight contests. Maybe he's due for a splash on Sunday?

Shortstop

Aledmys Diaz, STL vs. CIN ($3,100): The Cardinals' offense is clicking on all cylinders, having scored at least seven runs in seven of their last eight games. Diaz has done his part, scoring nine times in that stretch while collecting eight extra-base hits. He hits eighth in the order and isn't officially an everyday player, so there is some risk, but Diaz has been out-playing his price and there's little reason to expect Jon Moscot, who is making his first start of the season, to slow the Cards offense down.

Outfield

Bryce Harper, WAS at PHI ($5,900): There's no bargain here, and it will be interesting to see if Harper's price tag continues to swell and if so, what managers are willing to do in order to get him in their lineup. He's a better tournament play thanks to the high price and major upside, but given his recent surge, it seems prudent to at least try and make room for him. Harper has homered in three straight games, collecting six hits and nine RBI in that span. In a limited sample size, Harper is 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI against Sunday's starter, Charlie Morton.

Nick Markakis, ATL at MIA ($3,300): Markakis has been sizzling at the dish, entering Saturday batting .350 with 12 RBI in 11 games while spending most of his time in the team's leadoff spot. Mixing in six walks, he sports a nice .426 wOBP, a number that goes up to .534 on the road against right-handed pitching. He'll square off against Jarred Cosart, who did not escape the fifth inning in his first outing of 2016. Feel free to substitute Randal Grichuk for the same price if you're buying into a Cardinals stack.

Nomar Mazara, TEX vs. BAL ($2,800): Mazara collected three more hits Saturday (through seven innings), his fourth multi-hit game in seven outings since being recalled. Runs figure to be plentiful for both sides Sunday, but the Rangers in particular are facing the O's Mike Wright, who posted a 6.04 ERA last year and allowed four runs in five innings in his first start of 2016.
