DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Steven Wright, BOS vs. HOU ($9,100): Wright continues to mystify hitters with his knuckler, as he sports a 1.52 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 41.1 innings. He's also holding opposing batters to a .172/.268/.248 line and has the benefit of a red-hot offense to supply him with plenty of run support. He also draws the most strikeout-prone team in the majors in the Astros, who've whiffed 357 times, posted a .229 team batting average that's the fourth-lowest in all of baseball, and been blanked on six occasions. They certainly have plenty of power when they do connect, but Wright has given up only two home runs this year. He's also coming off a complete-game gem versus the Yankees in his last start, and has at least 25.6 fantasy points in three of his last four trips to the mound.

Rich Hill, OAK at TB ($9,700): Hill continues to stymie the opposition, scoring between 21.2 and 33.4 fantasy points in four of his last six starts. He's given up only four earned runs over the last 24.2 innings, while fanning 27 over that span. The Rays have struck out a sixth-highest 309 times on the season, while sporting the worst team batting average in the majors (.224). Although the Rays typically fare better against southpaws, they've also tallied the ninth-highest strikeout rate (24 percent) against that handedness of pitching this season.

CATCHER

Jonathan Lucroy, MIL vs. SD ($4,100): Lucroy draws spot starter Christian Friedrich, who gave up a .409 wOBA to the 143 righty batters he faced last season while pitching for the Rockies. That figure only drops to .389 over his 514-batter career sample, and Lucroy is already mashing right-handed pitching to the tune of a .421 wOBA over 86 plate appearances this season. That's par for the course for the Brewers' backstop, who's amassed a .332 wOBA and 47 of his 69 career dingers against righties. Some recent struggles (zero fantasy points in three of his last four games) are bound to keep the masses off him on such a large slate, but the matchup at Miller Park put him squarely in consideration.

FIRST BASE

Jose Abreu, CWS at NYY ($4,400): Abreu seems to often go relatively under-owned on full slates, but he draws a prime matchup against Luis Severino. The White Sox slugger is putting the screws to righties again this season, mashing all five homers against that handedness, and posting a .338 wOBA and .183 ISO, all on a .288 BABIP. That last figure is bound to rise some over the course of the season, and when it does, Abreu will likely approximate the .383 wOBA and .238 ISO that he's amassed against right-handed pitching in his two-plus major league seasons. He also has double-digit fantasy points in four of his last 10 games, and between four and nine fantasy points in five others during that span. Meanwhile, Severino has given up five homers over his last 12.2 innings, and has yielded a whopping .431 wOBA and 33.3 percent hard contact rate to the 67 right-handed hitters he's faced in 2016.

SECOND BASE

Jason Kipnis, CLE vs. MIN ($4,500): Kipnis brings both a hot bat and favorable history against Twins starter Ricky Nolasco. The Indians second baseman is coming off a 17-fantasy point outing versus the Astros on Wednesday on the strength of a 5-for-7 night, and he scored 13 the previous game as well. He's also posted a .333 average, two doubles, a homer, five RBI and a walk against Nolasco in 12 career at-bats. Kipnis brings an outstanding track record against righties, as he has a .377 wOBA and outstanding 43.1 percent hard contact rate against that handedness over 92 plate appearances in 2016. The latter figure rises to an even more impressive 57.1 percent over the 43 plate appearances he's logged against righties at home. Nolasco is surrendering a .344 wOBA and 37.3 percent hard contact rate overall to the 64 lefty bats he's faced this year.

THIRD BASE

Matt Duffy, SF at ARI ($4,100): Duffy takes aim at Shelby Miller, who's been unable to find much solid footing in a D-Backs uniform. The Giants' third baseman has hit right-handers very well over his young career, posting a .330 wOBA over his two-plus major league seasons. Miller has struggled to get anyone out this season and is yielding a .388 wOBA to the 62 right-handed hitters he's faced, as well as five of the seven homers he's given up. All of those gopher balls have notably come at Chase Field as well, furthering Duffy's appeal.

SHORTSTOP

Ketel Marte, SEA vs. LAA ($3,800): Marte has shown his upside with fantasy point totals of 14, 22 and 35 in three of his last 10 games, and he could be in line for some stolen base opportunities against the control-challenged Nick Tropeano. The switch-hitting speedster has the matchup on his side all the way around, as Tropeano has surrendered a .378 wOBA to the 78 lefty bats he's faced this season, along with 14 of the 17 free passes he's issued. Those figures bear out over a career view, as 29 of the 36 career walks he's handed out have come against left-handed hitters, and he's also yielded a .330 wOBA to them. Marte has a .300 batting average and all three of his stolen bases against right-handed pitchers this season.

OUTFIELD

Ryan Braun, MIL vs. SD ($4,800): We double dip on Brewers with Braun, who's bested his already outstanding .376 career wOBA against right-handed pitching with a .425 figure this season over 95 plate appearances. He's also scored between 11 and 23 fantasy points in five of the last 10 games.

Nomar Mazara, TEX vs. TOR ($3,500): Mazara continues to enjoy an outstanding rookie season yet remains very reasonably priced for his production. He's managed three double-digit fantasy point outings over his last 10, along with two other games with six and seven. He's also mashed righties to the tune of a .388 wOBA in the first 82 plate appearances of his career against them, and has all four of his homers versus that handedness as well. R.A. Dickey hasn't had much go right this season either, particularly against lefties, to which he's surrendered a .375 wOBA and 36.4 percent hard contact rate over a 78-batter sample.

Jay Bruce, CIN at PHI ($3,900): The veteran slugger draws the long ball-prone Jeremy Hellickson, who's given up five homers in the last 10.2 innings. Bruce has a typically impressive .352 wOBA, along with five of his six homers on the season, against right-handed pitching. Hellickson has surrendered a .407 wOBA to the 71 lefty hitters he's faced, and the number climbs to an astounding .662 wOBA against the 20 batters from that sample that he's encountered at home.
