FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Chris Tillman, BAL at HOU ($8,600): Tillman has scored no less than 43 fantasy points in any of his last five starts, and has shown a 59 fantasy point-ceiling this season. He's racked up nine and seven whiffs twice apiece during that span, and in the Astros he draws the second-most strikeout-prone team in the majors when facing right-handed pitching (25.5 percent strikeout rate). For what it's worth, Tillman has also fared well against them over the last three seasons, amassing a 2-2 record and 2.45 ERA in four starts against them while holding Houston to a collective .191 average. He's been stellar at Minute Maid Park in particular, where he's notched both of those wins and produced a 1.32 ERA.

Nate Karns, SEA vs. OAK ($8,500): Karns is a bonus suggestion, who I like about on par with Tillman on Tuesday. He's demonstrated some nice upside himself this season, with starts that have yielded 51, 43, and 39 fantasy points. He also draws a nice matchup against an A's team that has struggled against right-handed pitching, as their .295 wOBA against that handedness ranks as the fifth-lowest in the majors.

Catcher

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, DET vs. PHI ($2,500): Salty has definitely cooled off some, but his bat still packs a punch, particularly from the left side. That's good news against Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson, who's given up a .374 wOBA to left-handed bats overall, and a .464 wOBA to them at home over a 38-batter sample. On Salty's end, he's tallied a 387 wOBA and has hit six of his seven homers on the season versus right-handed pitching. He's no stranger to success against Hellickson either, as he's slashed .320/.433/.800 against him over 25 career at-bats with three doubles, three homers, five RBI and five walks.

First Base

Anthony Rizzo, CHC at STL ($3,800) - Rizzo is an exception to the $3,500 threshold that I typically don't exceed when recommending value plays on hitters, as he has a couple of factors working in his favor versus the inconsistent Michael Wacha. The most prominent might be his history against the Cardinals' starter, which consists of an eye-popping .455/.478/.727 line over 22 career at-bats along with two homers and four RBI. Then there's Rizzo's track record against right-handed pitching which, despite some recent struggles, still consists of a .410 wOBA, .307 ISO and 38.1 percent hard contact rate this season. Meanwhile, Wacha has given up a .335 wOBA and three of his four homers on the season to left-handed bats. He's also failed to get to the fifth inning in his last two starts, while surrendering 12 runs (eight earned) over that span.

Tommy Joseph, PHI at DET ($2,000): Since I went a little pricey with Rizzo's selection, Joseph checks in as an excellent alternative at the other end of the spectrum. It's not often you can get a player with two performances north of 20 fantasy points in the last five games for minimum price, but such is the case with Joseph. Tigers starter Justin Verlander has also notably struggled against right-handed hitters this season, surrendering a .355 wOBA and six of his eight homers on the season to them over a 128-batter sample.

Second Base

Neil Walker, NYM at WASH ($2,500): There's a few interesting bargains at second base Tuesday, including Chase Utley ($3,000) and Brett Lawrie ($2,700). However, I'm going to live a little and save a few hundred bucks in the process with Walker, who brings a nice .357/.400/.571 line against Nationals' starter Stephen Strasburg over 14 career at-bats, including a homer and two RBI. Although he's been a better overall hitter from the right side of the plate, Walker does have seven of his 11 homers on the season from the left side, along with a respectable .315 wOBA and 34.1 percent hard contact rate. Strasburg has undeniably been tough on lefty bats this season and isn't normally a pitcher to target, but Walker's price and the fact that he'll likely be highly under-owned make him an intriguing tournament option.

Third Base

Trevor Plouffe, MIN vs. KC ($2,500): Plouffe broke out of an 0-for-16 funk Monday with a 3-for-5 night, and will look to continue his resurgence Tuesday against a pitcher he's had some success against in Edinson Volquez. The Twins' third baseman has managed a .333 average against Volquez in 12 career at-bats, and also has all three homers this season against right-handed pitching. Volquez has been a reverse-splits pitcher, yielding a .357 wOBA to right-handed bats overall that rises to .471 when facing them on the road.

Shortstop

Brandon Crawford, SFG vs. SDP ($3,100): Several Giants bats have mashed Padres starter Andrew Cashner over his career, with Crawford being one of the most successful. He's managed a .400/.444/.600 line against him over 15 at-bats with a homer, five RBI and a pair of walks. He's also tallied a .346 wOBA and .245 ISO against right-handed pitching this season, along with all six of his homers. While Cashner has been tough on lefty bats this season over a modest sample of 17.2 innings, he's given up a .324 wOBA to that handedness over six-plus major league seasons.

Outfield

Paulo Orlando, KC at MIN ($2,700): Orlando's bat has been on fire, and an 8-for-12 tally over the last three games has netted 12.5 to 25.2 fantasy points, while also getting his season average up to an even .400 (over 65 at-bats). He's obviously excelled against both handedness of pitchers this season, and has a .369 wOBA and his only homer of the season against right-handed pitching. Ervin Santana has yielded a .316 wOBA versus righty bats this season, along with all three homers he's surrendered.

Austin Jackson, CWS vs. CLE ($2,800): Jackson has started to climb out of his season-long funk in recent days, going 5-for-8 with a double, triple, two RBI, and a pair of walks and runs scored over the last three games. His struggles have kept his price very manageable, and he draws a matchup against a pitcher he's tormented frequently in Josh Tomlin. Jackson has slashed .438/.471/.938 over 16 career at-bats against the Indians' starter, including three doubles, a triple, a homer and two RBI. He's experienced the overwhelming majority of his success against right-handed pitching this season as well, amassing a .317 wOBA. Tomlin has surrendered an almost identical .318 wOBA to right-handed bats in 2016, and a .333 figure over his six-plus major league seasons.

Cameron Maybin, DET vs. PHI ($3,200): We'll tab the white-hot Maybin before his price rises way above value level, which should be any day now at the rate he's going. After another multi-hit outing Monday, the Tigers outfielder is hitting a jaw-dropping .583 over his first 24 at-bats of the season, having hit safely in all seven games he's played. He's actually recorded double-digit fantasy points in all but last night's game, and draws a matchup in Hellickson that could be very conducive to continued success. Maybin has always hit right-handed pitching better than lefties over his career, and is posting an absurd .563 wOBA against that handedness over 19 plate appearances to date this season. While lefty bats have been Hellickson's Achilles' heel, he has yielded six of his nine homers on the season to right-handed hitters.
