FanDuel MLB: Friday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Friday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Adam Conley, MIA at ATL ($8,000): There's a lot of upper tier pitching available and eight pitchers come in with a higher price than Conley. Upon first glance, Robbie Ray ($6,800) looks like the better value at home against the Padres but San Diego has hit lefties well this season and has the 11th-worst wOBA on the season. The Braves, on the other hand, still own the worst wOBA against southpaws with a .258 mark and they strike out a 23.5 percent clip. Conley has pitched much better on the road this season with a 2.73 ERA and has 25 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. In GPPs, Julio Urias ($6,900) making his Dodger debut is an interesting option.

CATCHER

Welington Castillo, ARI vs. SD ($2,900): This is a great price for a catcher hitting in Chase Field, who has the RvL matchup and likely hitting cleanup. Paul Goldschmidt ($4,000) should hit in front of Castillo and will be one of the few popular picks outside of Coors Field. Castillo has more than held his own against lefties this season with a .463 wOBA, including .523 at home. Christian Friedrich's 2.89 ERA in fewer than 10 innings looks nice but the 2.04 WHIP suggests his luck is going to run out.

FIRST BASE

C.J. Cron, LAA vs. HOU ($2,900): This pick might look a little odd but opposing starter Mike Fiers gave up a .371 wOBA to right-handed hitters on the road last season and that number is at .459 this season. Cron hit much better at home last season with a respectable .832 OPS, he's been hitting in the middle of the order and has gone 3-for-6 against Fiers with two home runs and a single.

SECOND BASE

Devon Travis, TOR vs. BOS ($2,200): Travis was likely called up to provide the Toronto offense and it's easy to forget how good he was last season before injuring his shoulder. He had an .859 OPS with the Blue Jays and was on pace to flirt with 20 home runs. This price seems way to cheap, and he's scored 9.7 and 6.2 fantasy points in his first two games, respectively, since being called up. Joe Kelly had a 4.97 ERA on the road last season and has struggled in his last two starts at Rogers Centre.

THIRD BASE

Nick Castellanos, DET at OAK ($3,400): This isn't a very cheap price but it's worth noting that 18 players are priced at least $3,000. Castellanos is in the middle of a breakout season, as his nine home runs have led to a .955 OPS. He has a .345 wOBA against southpaws for his career and opposing starter Sean Manaea (7.62 ERA) is likely one bad start away from being sent down. It doesn't hurt that Castellanos will hit in the heart of the lineup, one of the better ones in baseball.

SHORTSTOP

Jordy Mercer, PIT at TEX ($2,900): It is probably best to pay up for one of the top options at the position (there are eight at least $3,800) and Mercer makes a good contrarian play. He's coming off a "poor" performance Thursday against Patrick Corbin and gets another lefty in Cole Hamels. Mercer should be in the leadoff spot and his numbers against left-handed pitching are very good, as he's hitting .429 batting first this season and for his career he has a .372 wOBA against lefties.

OUTFIELD

Franklin Gutierrez, SEA vs. MIN ($2,300): Like the Castillo/Goldschmidt situation, many will flock to Nelson Cruz against a lefty and overlook Gutierrez, who has a career .359 wOBA against left-handed pitching, including .411 last season. Minnesota is starting career minor-leaguer Pat Dean, who has given up a .377 wOBA to 54 right-handed batters this season. It doesn't hurt that Gutierrez comes into the game having hit home runs in two of his last five starts.

Ryan Rua, TEX vs PIT ($2,400): Rua has become a lefty specialist this season, and with the weather getting hot and humid, the ball should be flying out of Arlington. Rua sports a .467 wOBA against lefties in 37 plate appearances, and that number increases to .549 at home. Jon Niese has given up seven home runs in 19.1 innings on the road to right-handed batters this season, putting Adrian Beltre ($3,400) and Elvis Andrus ($3,500) in play as well.

Bryce Harper, WAS vs STL ($3,800): After getting a day off, Harper returned with a bang Thursday night by hitting a long home run to right field. He's been a little quiet and his mini-slump has dropped his price below the $4,000 mark for the first time in a while. The matchup against Jaime Garcia may not appear good at first glance but Harper has a .367 wOBA this season against lefties. Surprisingly, Jaime Garcia has a worse career wOBA against lefties and his career wOBA on the road is almost 50 points higher than at home.
