DraftKings MLB: Monday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Jon Lester, CHC at PHI ($11,600): The chalk selection here is an indication that I don't like any other high-priced pitching option, meaning we will have some fun with a value pick later. The Phillies are the second-worst team in the league against lefties, according to wOBA, and haven't fared well against the cutter, a pitch Lester throws more than 23 percent of the time.

Chris Archer, TB at ARI ($7,900): There is no way to sugar coat how bad Archer has been on the road this year, but I think there is more upside here than paying for Tyler Chatwood or Michael Fulmer, who has been homer-prone against righties. The Diamondbacks are the fifth-worst team in the league against the slider, which is still an above-average pitch for Archer. They also hit the fewest fly balls, which should bode well for his nearly 47 percent ground ball rate. The two aforementioned pitchers may offer safer floors, but this is a matchup that is tailor made for Archer's pitching profile.

CATCHER

David Ross. CHC at PHI ($2,800): I always enjoy when Adam Morgan's name is on the docket, as it makes my job quite a bit easier. This is particularly true against the strong right-handed bats of the Cubs, as Morgan is carrying an xFIP over 5.00 against his opposite hand. Ross seems like a safe bet to get the nod against most southpaws due to his .391 batting average and .304 ISO over 23 at-bats.

FIRST BASE

Steve Pearce, TB at ARI ($3,500): Speaking of lefty mashing, Robbie Ray should have quite the time against Pearce, who has a ridiculous .542 wOBA against southpaws over 42 at-bats. Ray is another high-strikeout pitcher with issues, but Pearce has maintained a whiff rate of less than 15 percent this season, which is quite impressive when you consider his power.

SECOND BASE

Neil Walker, NYM at PIT ($3,500): Walker seems intent on bucking trends this season, as he is sporting a 1.123 OPS from the right side of the plate. Walker's extreme fly ball tendencies should match up well against Jon Niese's 54 percent ground ball rate.

THIRD BASE

Adrian Beltre, TEX vs. HOU ($4,500): Beltre's rejuvenation in his age-37 season makes him a nice option against Mike Fiers, who has shown a fondness for allowing home runs to right-handed batters. Beltre has been a better overall hitter against lefties in 2016, but his .208 ISO against righties is actually a tick higher than his mark against southpaws.

SHORTSTOP

Javier Baez, CHC at PHI ($3,500): Baez's playing time has become a bit sporadic since coming off a massive hot streak, but he could start seeing regular time against lefties thanks to his .450/.522/.650 over 20 at-bats. Baez still sports a cringe-inducing strikeout-to-walk ratio, but he shouldn't have to worry about that against Morgan, as he has struck out just 15 percent of batters this season.

OUTFIELD

Colby Rasmus, HOU at TEX ($3,600):Colby Lewis is someone who has (somehow) managed to keep the regression monster at bay for most of the season, but I will continue to take my shot with left-handers. Rasmus shouldn't have to worry about striking out against Lewis, which should leave him free to feast off the 39 percent hard contact rate he allows to left-handed hitters.

Jose Bautista TOR at DET ($3,900): We will attempt to put that homer-prone resume of Fulmer to use with Bautista, who has tallied an impressive .243 ISO against right-handed pitchers. He also comes in at 3.5 runs above average against the slider, a pitch Fulmer throws more than 27 percent of the time.

Carlos Gonzalez COL at LAD ($4,900): Mike Bolsinger has not completed six innings in his last nine starts dating back to last season, pitching fewer than five frames in five of those outings. Bolsinger has been a ground ball pitcher for most of his career, but has shown solid fly ball tendencies in each of his three starts this year, which should sit well with Cargo and his nearly 50 percent ground ball rate.

Other options: Ian Desmond, TEX vs. HOU ($5,200); Nelson Cruz, SEA vs. CLE ($4,100); J.D. Martinez, DET vs. TOR ($4,100)
