FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Brandon Finnegan, CIN at ATL ($6,100): Finnegan has tallied 34 and 36 fantasy points over his last two starts, and now faces a Braves team whose offense has been positively anemic versus southpaws. Atlanta sports a league-worst .256 wOBA and .079 ISO versus left-handed pitching, while whiffing 23.1 percent of the time against that handedness as well. They also have a .231 team batting average that's the second-lowest in the majors, and their collective 27 homers and 188 RBI are the lowest figures for any team in those categories this season. To top it off, Finnegan has been much more effective away from hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park this season, as he's held batters to a .202 average and generated a solid 3.22 ERA over 36.1 road innings.

Catcher

Salvador Perez, KAN vs. CLE ($3,100): Finding offensively-viable value under the $3,500 threshold at catcher can often be a challenge, but Perez always presents as an option with plenty of upside. He's priced reasonably once again, and brings the added advantage of a career .650/.650/1.100 line over 20 at-bats against Indians starter Josh Tomlin which includes six doubles, a homer and six RBI. His .364 wOBA, .222 ISO, 38.5 percent hard contact rate and six homers (out of nine) against right-handed pitching certainly don't hurt his cause either. Tomlin has pitched solidly in all but one start recently but the long ball has been a problem, as he's surrendered a total of 12 round-trippers on the season with half of those coming off right-handed bats.

First Base

Matt Adams, STL vs. HOU ($3,400): Adams is enjoying an outstanding season and has particularly prospered against right-handed pitching. He's tallied a .399 wOBA, .257 ISO and 36.1 percent hard contact rate against righty arms, with those respective figures rising to .539, .411, and 45.7 percent when facing them at home. Fister has been a boon for lefty bats as well, as he's yielded a .375 wOBA to them that rises to .408 when facing them on the road. Seven of the nine homers he's given up on the season have also been at the hands of left-handed hitters, with five of those coming in road starts.

Second Base

Jason Kipnis, CLE at KAN ($3,200): The price is right on the Indians' second baseman, particularly considering the matchup. Kipnis has decimated fading Royals starter Chris Young to the tune of a .412/.444/.824 line over 17 at-bats with two doubles, a triple, a homer and three RBI. He mashes righties in general, as he's posted a .354 wOBA and 38.4 percent hard contact rate against them this season, and is also sporting an even more impressive .384 wOBA so far in June. Meanwhile, Young's numbers against left-handed hitters have to be seen to be believed, as he's surrendered an absurd .512 wOBA, 11.31 FIP, 5.52 xFIP and 52.5 percent hard contact rate to them this season over an 86-batter sample. Kipnis also brings plenty of upside, as evidenced by his four games over the last 10 with double-digit fantasy points.

Third Base

Yunel Escobar, LAA vs. MIN ($2,900): Twins starter Ervin Santana's undoing this season has primarily been right-handed hitting, as he's surrendered a .370 wOBA and six of his eight homers to that handedness. He's also generated a whopping 7.30 ERA in 12.1 June frames and has yielded a 33 percent hard contact rate overall to righty bats. Escobar brings the added benefit of a leadoff role in the lineup, and a career .368/.400/.421 line against Santana over 19 at-bats.

Shortstop

Javier Baez, CHC at WAS ($3,000): Baez's bat has been heating up, as he has fantasy point totals of 28.7, 16.2, 18.7, 25.5 and 31.9 in five of his last 10 games along with a .429 wOBA so far in June. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez started off the season on fire, but has been looking increasingly hittable since then. He's generated a 5.54 ERA over 13 innings in June, which follows a month of May that saw him give up a 5.23 ERA and .351 wOBA. He's yielded all eight homers this season to right-handed hitters as well, along with a 34.9 percent hard contact rate. Meanwhile, in 34 plate appearances against southpaws this season, Baez has a .451 wOBA and .226 ISO.

Outfield

Steve Pearce, TAM at SEA ($3,000): Pearce has been mashing just about everybody this season and now draws a matchup against a pitcher who's considerably more vulnerable to right-handed hitters in Taijuan Walker. The Mariners starter has given up a .347 wOBA to righty bats, including .324 at home. Pearce owns a .369 wOBA against right-handed pitchers that rises to .397 when facing them on the road, and is sporting an outstanding .530 wOBA so far in June.

Ryan Braun, MIL at SFG ($2,900): This is my contrarian suggestion of the day, as Braun's price is too good to ignore even considering his recent struggles and his matchup against Madison Bumgarner. Braun certainly has a pedigree against both left-handed pitching and the Giants' ace himself. He's mashed southpaws to the tune of a .472 wOBA, .308 ISO and 42.6 percent hard contact rate this season. He's also one of the few hitters who can claim some career success off Bumgarner, as he's generated a solid .308/.308/.654 line against him over 26 at-bats with three doubles, two homers and four RBI. Again, there's always the risk of a zero when rostering against the dominant lefty, but Braun brings considerable upside (as evidenced by his 37.4 fantasy points just three games ago) at a bargain cost.

Tyler Naquin, CLE at KAN ($2,700): The rookie has largely thrived since being recalled at the beginning of the month, already tallying over 20 fantasy points in three games and over 30 in another. He's shown nice power upside with four homers this season and has amassed a .380 wOBA, .207 ISO and 42.3 percent hard contact rate versus right-handed pitching. He's got a .461 wOBA and .433 ISO in June and gives us another lefty bat with which to take aim at Royals starter Chris Young, a righty whose epic struggles against left-handed hitters are detailed in Kipnis' entry.
