FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Johnny Cueto, SF vs. COL ($10,800): Do not be fooled by the fact he gave up 10 runs over his last two outings, Cueto is just fine and undoubtedly the top arm on today's slate. Not to say his price tag is cheap, but given the lack of upside provided by the other pitchers and quantity of value bats, it's more than fair. Cueto has finished with eight or more strikeouts in three of his last five outings and after being fairly consistent all season has an xFIP of 3.39. Over the past 30 days, the Rockies also have a below average wRC+ of 97 and K-rate of 23.7 percent. The spatial dimensions and marine layer in San Francisco, as always, give the pitcher the upper hand.

Catcher

Buster Posey, SF vs. COL ($3,200): Posey possesses a 160 wRC+ against left-handed pitching this season. Jorge De La Rosa has allowed a righty split that is .064 wOBA points higher and an xFIP an entire digit higher (4.41 vs. 3.40) than against lefties.

First Base

Dae-Ho Lee, SEA at HOU ($2,900): Mike Fiers is among the rare righties to possess worse splits against righty batters. Lee, possibly in part due to familiarity from his time in the RHP-dominated Korean Baseball Organization, also has a superior split against right-handed pitching with a 134 wRC+.

Second Base

Jose Altuve, HOU vs. SEA ($3,800): Altuve's career split against southpaws is 47 wRC+ points higher than that against righties, and he faces one today in Wade LeBlanc. The stolen bases take a small hit against lefties, but such a sharp split for a second baseman with a 161 wRC+ makes a price tag under $4,000 difficult to overlook.

Third Base

Evan Longoria, TB vs. LAA ($3,400): Longoria is the top hitter on the Rays against righties with a 120 wRC+ and .249 ISO. They're also facing one of the perpetually bad pitchers in MLB in Jered Weaver, who's sporting a 5.69 xFIP on the season.

Shortstop

Grant Green, SFG vs. COL ($2,000): A 2009 first round draft pick, Green hasn't found much success in the majors, but in a sample size too incredibly small to draw conclusions from he has hit lefties well this season. De La Rosa's righty splits have burned him throughout his career. It's certainly a punt, but at a weak position it's worth the savings.

Outfield

Michael Saunders, TOR vs. KC ($3,400): Ian Kennedy has struggled mightily away from home and against lefties, sporting an xFIP of 5.34 against lefties and 5.25 on the road. Saunders is in a position to exploit both splits and continue his career year given his current 141 wRC+ and .254 ISO.

Stephen Piscotty, STL vs. PIT ($3,500): Southpaw Jeff Locke has allowed a 5.11 xFIP against righties this year while Piscotty has absolutely crushed left-handed pitching to the tune of a 189 wRC+.

Matt Holliday, STL vs. PIT ($2,800): Holliday's career splits L/R are actually pretty even, but a desirable spot in the batting order and solidly above average hitting stats make him an exceptional value play against Locke.

Travis Jankowski, SDP at ARI ($2,500): Shelby Miller has been absolutely punished by lefties this season with a .418 wOBA and 5.90 xFIP. Jankowski's K-rate is a serious long-term issue, but he possesses a solid 117 wRC+ against righties (undoubtedly inflated by a BABIP over .400) along with 11 stolen bases in just 80 plate appearances while sitting atop the Padres order.
