FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Tanner Roark, WAS vs. ATL ($8,900): Roark was in this column last Sunday and required very little editing this week while remaining atop the column. No pitcher in the majors has more seven-plus inning shutout appearances this year than Roark, who has done so seven times. He's allowed only 13 runs over his last 33.1 innings and while Braves' hitters have had success against him previously, Roark shut the Braves out over seven innings back in April. His strikeout upside is minimal, but with 39 or more fantasy points in three straight and four of his last five, Roark provides top potential for a few grand less.

Catcher

Tucker Barnhart, CIN vs. MIL ($2,400): This game checks in with the highest over/under total on the slate at 9.5 and unless you want to spend freely at a woeful position, Barnhart seems to make sense. He enters Sunday having hit safely 10 straight games and has actually been better against right-handed hurlers, posting a .318 wOBP compared to .274 against southpaws. The only caveat here is that Barnhart has been in the lineup every day this week and could be due a day off with the daytime start. A.J. Pierzynski ($2,000) is 7-of-10 with two homers in his career against Roark, and can be a plug-in should Barnhart sit Sunday.

First Base

Joey Votto, CIN at MIL ($3,800): Votto comes into Sunday swinging a hot bat, recording at least two hits in each of his last four games and after hitting .413 in July, he's hitting .389 in August. Votto brings a .408 wOBP against righties into a matchup with Wily Peralta, who has allowed 54 runs in 72 innings this season. Votto is locked in, giving him arguably the safest floor amongst the top-priced first basemen, and the matchup gives him plenty of upside.

Second Base

DJ LeMahieu, COL at PHI ($3,500): The price here may be a little steeper than many want at a non-marquee position, but LeMahieu is just the fourth-highest priced Rockie in a plus matchup against lefty Adam Morgan. Five Rockies boast wOBPs greater than .350 against southpaws, with LeMahieu checking in right in the middle at .392. He should benefit from hitting in front of the team's big bats against Morgan, who has allowed 53 runs over 66.1 innings to date.

Third Base

Jose Reyes, NYM vs. SDP ($2,500): Facing Clayton Richard and his 6.46 ERA could be just what the Mets need to get their offense in gear. Richard will move into the rotation after having not thrown more than one inning in any appearance since July 12 so, even if he's on, he's not likely to work deep into the contest. Reyes has hit lefties well, sporting a .426 wOBP and .393 ISO, and is underpriced in this plus matchup thanks to his recent stint on the disabled list, from which he was activated Saturday.

Shortstop

Orlando Arcia, MIL vs. CIN ($2,700): Though hitting just .200 since being recalled, Arcia has shown signs of life since moving into the two-hole in the lineup. He had a seven-game hit streak snapped Friday and has an appealing matchup against lefty Cody Reed who, despite throwing six scoreless innings in his last appearance, has allowed 10 runs over his last 16 innings and has been lit up by right-handed bats to the tune of a .401 wOBP and a .957 OPS. Arcia is similar to LeMahieu here in that assuming he remains second in the order, he should benefit from the higher-priced bats hitting behind him.

Outfield

Max Kepler, MIN vs. KAN ($3,600): Kepler was a tough inclusion here, as he has done little of late, but this is a play against Royals' starter Edinson Volquez who has allowed 16 runs and 30 hits in his last 17 innings. Kepler gets the nod as a left-handed bat over Miguel Sano ($3,600) and Robbie Grossman ($2,800). Kepler owns a .311 ISO and .388 wOBP against righties, giving him a chance to get just his second extra-base hit in his last 10 games.

Jorge Soler, CHC vs. STL ($3,000): Not buying a piece of the Cubs' offense against the combustible Mike Leake seems irresponsible, but the team has three bats priced at $3,900 making bargain shopping a little challenging. For me, the choice came down to Soler and catcher Wilson Contreras ($3,000), and neither is a bad option. Soler has a respectable .330 wOBP and .209 ISO against righties and he's swung the bat well in August, hitting .429 with three home runs in six games since returning from injury. Leake meanwhile has allowed 22 runs in his last four starts, spanning 22 innings.

Lonnie Chisenhall, CLE vs. LAA ($2,900): Chisenhall has three hits and six RBI in his last two starts and has a .345 wOBP against righties to date while hitting all six of his homers against them. He's also had success against Jered Weaver, going 7-of-19 with two homers. Weaver has allowed 25 long balls in 22 starts and has allowed seven runs in 11 innings during two August starts.
