Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

David Price, BOS at BAL ($43): Price has been admittedly confounded at times this season but draws an Orioles squad that he dominated most recently June 14 for 30.4 fantasy points on the strength of an eight-inning, 11-strikeout performance. He's far from the only southpaw to give Baltimore fits this season, as they've generated an AL-worst .299 wOBA against lefties along with a 21.5 percent strikeout rate. The Orioles have also been slumping with a .304 wOBA over the last seven days. There've been risks associated with rostering Price all season but he brings plenty of strikeout upside for tournaments.

Chris Archer, SD at TB ($40): Speaking of risky strikeout artists we present Archer, who is enduring the worst season of his career. Despite the struggles, he's shown flashes of his dominant stuff in multiple starts and has actually pitched very well at home. Archer has a solid 2.91 ERA, .208 average against and a .280 wOBA over 77.1 innings at Tropicana Field this season. The Padres also continue to rank last in the majors against right-handed pitching with a paltry .293 wOBA along with a 24.5 percent strikeout rate. As with Price, the strikeout upside in tournaments is sky high for Archer on Wednesday.

Catcher

Willson Contreras, CHC vs. MIL ($8): At a dollar away from minimum and with a solid matchup, Contreras provides an appealing option for those looking to save cash at catcher. He boasts a .349 wOBA against right-handers that rises to .375 (along with a .238 ISO) when facing them at Wrigley. Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson gives up a .349 wOBA to right-handed hitters on the road and has a 10.13 ERA over 13.1 innings in three August starts, giving up 16 runs (15 earned) and a .464 wOBA.

First Base

Freddie Freeman, ATL vs. MIN ($24): Freeman is the most potent Braves lefty bat to deploy if you're looking to capitalize on Twins starter Kyle Gibson's .407 wOBA and .558 slugging percentage allowed to left-handed hitters on the road. Freeman has been hitting both handedness of pitchers hard and has a .381 wOBA, .271 ISO and 40.7 percent hard contact rate against righty arms. He's been wielding a red-hot bat as well, with double-digit fantasy points in four of the last five games along with four homers over that span.

Second Base

Derek Dietrich, MIA at CIN ($7): I'm not passing on Dietrich at bare minimum, especially against a right-handed pitcher in Homer Bailey who's surrendered a .351 wOBA to lefty bats over a limited sample this season and a .331 wOBA and 52 homers to them over his nine-plus major league seasons. Dietrich has tallied a .366 wOBA against righties and a .381 wOBA and 138 wRC+ when facing them outside of Marlins Park.

Third Base

Adrian Beltre, TEX vs. OAK ($18): A's starter Sean Manaea has been solid in his last two starts, but those have come in his spacious home park. He's been a much different pitcher on the road, giving up a 6.88 ERA and .390 wOBA over 34 innings. He's also yielded a massive .406 wOBA, .595 slugging percentage and 40.8 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters on the road, while Beltre has a .424 wOBA against southpaws that shoots up to .480, along with a massive 203 wRC+ and 43.5 percent hard contact rate, when taking them on at Globe Life Park.

Shortstop

Corey Seager, LAD at PHI ($20): Seager gets to take his hacks against Phillies rookie Jake Thompson, who lefty hitters have decimated to the tune of a .416 wOBA in his first two career starts. Seager's body of work against righties includes a .397 wOBA, .232 ISO and a 38 percent hard contact rate and he also has a .401 wOBA since the All-Star break.

Outfield

Gregory Polanco, PIT at SF ($13): Polanco is sporting a depressed price, making him an appealing, cost-conscious target against Giants starter Matt Cain, who yields a .396 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Polanco counters that nicely with a .358 wOBA, .217 ISO, 13 homers and 35.2 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching and a solid .339 wOBA overall on the road.

Ian Desmond, TEX vs. OAK ($12): Manaea's issues on the road and against right-handed hitters were detailed earlier, rendering Desmond a terrific cost-effective play against him. The Rangers outfielder has a .391 wOBA against lefties that shoots up to an astronomical .467 (along with a .281 ISO and 33.3 percent hard contact rate) when facing them at Globe Life Park. Recent struggles have notably knocked his price down and given his favorable track record, he shapes up as a high-upside and likely low-owned tournament play.

Ender Inciarte, ATL vs. MIN ($16): Carlos Beltran ($16) is another appealing option at this price and makes for a nice three-man stack with Beltre and Desmond but I also like Inciarte as another left-handed bat against Gibson. He took a six-game hitting streak into Tuesday's action and has a .377 wOBA over 59 August plate appearances. Furthermore, the Twins are tied for worst in the AL and second-worst in the majors in runners thrown out on steal attempts (19.18 percent), giving a boost to Inciarte's already considerable stolen base potential if he gets on.
