Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Carlos Rodon, CWS at CLE ($32): Rodon has turned in back-to-back solid outings in August, allowed two runs and striking out 11 over 12 innings. He'll face a team that he's dominated in his brief career in Cleveland. Rodon has won three times in four starts against the Indians, owning a 1.52 ERA with 26 strikeouts over 29.2 innings. Yes, the Indians have a respectable .327 wOBP against lefties on the year, but they also sport just a .156 ISO and .763 OPS, seeming keeping Rodon's risk low.

Hisashi Iwakuma, SEA at LAA ($36):
Iwakuma has won all three of his August starts while allowing only three runs over 19.2 frames. The Angels have just a .143 ISO against righties, and Iwakuma has dominated two of the Angels' biggest power threats in Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to the tune of 15-for-87 (.172). Prior to Tuesday, the Halos had lost 11 straight, giving Iwakuma a chance to pick up a cheap win.

CATCHER

Omar Narvaez, CWS at CLE ($10): Narvaez had hit safely in seven consecutive games prior to an 0-for-3 performance on Tuesday. Getting the day off Wednesday, he seems likely to start over Dioner Navarro. Albeit a limited sample, Narvaez has a.434 wOBP against right-handers and gets a crack at Danny Salazar in his first game back from the disabled list. Thursday's slate lends itself to spending elsewhere, but there's little appeal to the bottom-priced catchers, unless the Cubs allow Wilson Contreras ($8) to catch for Jake Arrieta. Assuming they don't, Narvaez gives you a chance of not getting shut out at a bare position.

FIRST BASE

Victor Martinez, DET vs. BOS ($18): While the Tigers' top bats are certainly in play against Clay Buchholz, Martinez, likely hitting in the cleanup spot, offers nice value against a pitcher allowing a .384 wOBP and .899 OPS to lefties. Martinez's .357 wOBP only adds to the appeal in what could be a high-scoring affair Thursday afternoon.

SECOND BASE

Trea Turner, WAS at ATL ($15): Turner's scorching at the plate, owning an eight-game hitting streak that has seen him collect 13 hits, four stolen bases and score 10 runs. He recently went 8-for-15 in a three-game series against the Braves, and nothing suggests he'll slow against a struggling rookie hurler in Rob Whalen, who has allowed 13 runs and 15 hits over 16.0 innings in his first three career starts.

THIRD BASE

Yangervis Solarte, SD vs. ARI ($16): Grabbing a Padre or two against Archie Bradley is advisable, as Bradley has allowed 14 runs and 22 hits over 13.1 August innings. Solarte checks in $7 less than the top third baseman, and his .363 wOBP and .210 ISO, when paired with a 13.2 percent strikeout rate, make him the safer Padre over second baseman Ryan Schimpf ($14, .353 ISO, 25.2 percent strikeout rate). On the other side of the diamond, Diamondbacks' third baseman Jake Lamb ($11) looks appealing as well.

SHORTSTOP

Xander Bogaerts, BOS at DET ($14): The price here is just too low to ignore, despite the frigid August Bogaerts is enduring. He's just 9-for-52 (.228) this month, with all hits going for singles. Despite those struggles, he owns a .371 wOBP against lefties heading into a matchup with Matt Boyd, who is allowing a 32.7 hard-hit ball percentage to righties, suggesting Bogaerts could square one up.

OUTFIELD

Mookie Betts, BOS at DET ($27): It's a steep price to pay with Betts checking in as the top-priced outfielder. But with two more hits Wednesday, Betts has 10 hits in his last 16 at-bats, five of which have been homers. He owns a .276 ISO against lefties and runs likely won't be scarce Thursday with Matt Boyd facing Clay Buchholz. Boyd has allowed a home run in every six hits surrendered to righties this season. The only caveat appears to be the Red Sox schedule, as they played in Baltimore Wednesday night and face a day game in Detroit Thursday, so make sure to confirm their lineup before enjoying Betts.

Bryce Harper, WAS at ATL ($14):
With Harper's price remaining so low, he's well worth the risk in the event he breaks out of his season-long slump. He showed signs of life in the team's recent three-game stint in Colorado, going 5-for-10 while adding his first home run since July 20. We've already touched on the struggles of Braves' starter Rob Whalen, and pairing Harper with Trea Turner gives you two top Nats bats for $29 total. For all of his woes, Harper still has a .361 wOBP against righties, while Whalen has allowed two homers and nine RBI to lefties in just 27 plate appearances.

Mitch Haniger, ARI at SD ($7):
There's no shortage of top-priced pitching on Thursday, and there's also no shortage of bad pitchers presenting plus matchups for top-priced bats. If you're looking to go big at multiple positions, and plug holes for the minimum, Haniger makes for an upside play. He's hit out of the two-hole Wednesday, fresh off of a 2-for-4, three RBI debut. If he remains near the top of the order, he should easily outplay his bottom-tiered price in a game with two pitchers owning ERAs north of 4.65.
