Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Yu Darvish, TEX at CIN ($50): Darvish has been the model of consistency when healthy this season, scoring no less than 21 fantasy points in any start and demonstrating a ceiling north of 30 fantasy points. He's also tallied seven or more strikeouts in seven of his 10 starts and takes on a Reds team that's whiffed at a 21.4 percent clip against right-handed pitching while amassing a mediocre .310 wOBA. Darvish has also been tough on the road this season, posting a 2.66 ERA and allowing just a .288 wOBA over 23.2 innings.

Hisashi Iwakuma, SEA vs. NYY ($38): Iwakuma has been mostly lights out in his four August starts, posting a 1.69 ERA and allowing a minuscule .253 wOBA. He draws a Yankees squad that sports the second-lowest wOBA on the road in the AL (.297) and the eighth-lowest overall in baseball (.308) against right-handed pitching. Iwakuma has also scored between 35 and 38 fantasy points in four of his last eight starts, providing a glimpse at his considerable upside.

Catcher

Willson Contreras, CHC at SD ($9): Contreras continues to be priced near-minimum, making him a low-risk tournament play against the Padres' Paul Clemens. Clemens surrenders a .434 wOBA and 40.3 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters and a .454 wOBA and bloated 6.68 xFIP when facing them at home. Contreras owns a .347 wOBA against right-handed pitching, a 37.5 percent hard contact rate against that handedness outside of Wrigley, and a .341 wOBA over his last 15 games.

First Base

Victor Martinez, DET at MIN ($16): Martinez represents one of several cost-effective ways to get some right-handed Tigers exposure to Twins starter Tyler Duffey, who's given up a .414 wOBA and 11 homers to righty bats at Target Field along with a 40.3 percent hard contact rate and 28.2 percent HR/FB rate. The switch-hitting Martinez is particularly good against right-handed pitching on the road, where's he tallied a .389 wOBA, .206 ISO and 41.7 percent hard contact rate. He's been swinging a hot bat as of late as well, with a .373 wOBA and five homers over his last 17 games.

Second Base

Ian Kinsler, DET at MIN ($12): I'm going right back to the Tigers right-handed bats by tabbing Kinsler, whose price has seen a significant drop due to an epic slump. The veteran second baseman is just 1-for-29 since Aug. 15, which essentially guarantees his ownership will be at or very near a season low. It's a good time to get a bargain on the talented vet, who boasts a .346 wOBA and half of his 22 homers on the season against right-handed pitching on the road. Duffey's considerable struggles against right-handed hitters at home were detailed earlier as well, making Kinsler a sneaky and low-risk GPP play.

Third Base

Kris Bryant, CHC at SD ($25): The red-hot Bryant, who's homered in three of his past four games, makes for a great right-handed bat with which to target Clemens, considering the aforementioned trouble the Padres starter has had against righty hitters. Bryant has smacked around right-handed pitching to the tune of a .412 wOBA, .285 ISO, 21.7 HR/FB rate and 42.8 percent hard contact rate outside of Wrigley and has an absurd .457 wOBA and .300 ISO in his last 19 games.

Shortstop

Danny Espinosa, WAS vs. BAL ($9): Espinosa is another tournament-only special that comes at a significant savings and what will likely be microscopic ownership. He makes for a sneaky, low-risk play against Orioles starter Wade Miley, who was blasted by the Astros in his last start for six earned runs over just 1.2 innings. He's actually endured a rough August overall, generating a 9.53 ERA over his four starts during the month. Miley has also given up a .364 wOBA and a whopping 18 homers on the season to righty bats, while Espinosa has a .325 ISO and 36 percent hard contact rate against southpaws at Nationals Park.

Outfield

Christian Yelich, MIA vs. KC ($19): Yelich makes for a nice target against Royals starter Dillon Gee, who's given up a .311 average and .369 wOBA to lefty bats on the road this season. That dovetails favorably with Yelich's track record of decimating righties at Marlins Park, where he's posted a .405 wOBA, .221 ISO, 24.1 percent HR/FB rate and 40 percent hard contact rate against that handedness.

Cameron Maybin, DET at MIN ($14): Maybin is back to his outstanding level of production just four games into his return from the DL, already having tallied two games with double-digit fantasy points. That includes an 18-fantasy point night against the Twins on Tuesday, and there could be more where that came from Wednesday against the aforementioned Duffey. Maybin has a .335 wOBA against right-handed pitching and will be poised to take advantage of the Twins' mediocre defense against baserunners if he gets on, as well as Duffey's generosity when facing righty bats.

Melvin Upton Jr., TOR vs. LAA ($8): Upton brings some excellent upside for an $8 player, with his three homers in the last five games serving as a prime example. Angels starter Matt Shoemaker makes for a tempting target as well considering the .368 average, .450 wOBA and .641 slugging percentage he's yielded to right-handed hitters on the road this season along with a bloated 42.1 fly ball rate.
