NFL Waiver Wire: Week 2 Pickups

NFL Waiver Wire: Week 2 Pickups

This article is part of our NFL Waiver Wire series.

This column is geared toward "standard" 12-team leagues and based upon a $100 free-agent budget. Please, please adjust for your league based on both the number of teams (I'm in a 24-team league, for example) and budget. This column will run every Tuesday to, hopefully, accommodate the various waiver schedules. I'll update it in the comments section during the week; please keep in mind a lot can change from Tuesday to Sunday.

QUARTERBACK

Hail Mary

Josh McCown, CLE - McCown will take over at quarterback after Robert Griffin was placed on IR on Monday. McCown showed good chemistry last year with Gary Barnidge and has a nice group of wide receivers to work with, especially after Josh Gordon comes back. McCown's stats from last season weren't terrible as he had a 7.2 YPA with 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The Browns should play from behind a lot this season, forcing McCown to air it out a lot. FAAB: $1-$2

RUNNING BACK

Primary Targets

Theo Riddick, DET - Riddick made a big splash Sunday against the Colts, finishing with 108 yards from scrimmage, five catches and two touchdowns. He came close to scoring another one, though it should be pointed out the Colts were down a few starters on defense. Riddick caught 80 balls last year, and it appears the Lions are ready to give him more carries as well (seven Sunday, 43 last season). With added value in PPR formats, Riddick has the upside to post more

With added value in PPR formats, Riddick has the upside to post more than 80 receptions and more than 800 yards receiving. FAAB: $8-$12

Tevin Coleman, ATL - Coleman has a 43 percent ownership on Yahoo, so it's a coin flip in most leagues as to whether he's available. The Falcons kept their word about dividing touches in the backfield with Coleman getting 13 touches and Devonta Freeman getting 15. Coleman looked especially good in the passing game, taking a pass out of the backfield down the sideline for a 47-yard gain, and his five catches easily surpassed his total of two from last season. He should continue to get 10-15 touches per game, which puts him in the weekly conversation for at least a flex spot. FAAB: $8-$12

Hail Mary

Jalen Richard, OAK - It would be great to pump up Richard more after he scored on a 75-yard run, but there are a few reasons to pump the brakes. The run came against what appears to be another disaster of a defense in New Orleans, and Richard totaled only five touches. He's still technically behind DeAndre Washington on the depth chart and Latavius Murray is still the the workhorse for the Raiders. Still, Richard should at least be on everyone's radar now, but it's going to take an injury or two until he has real fantasy relevance. FAAB: $1-$2

WIDE RECEIVER

Primary Targets

Will Fuller, HOU - Fuller is 50 percent owned on Yahoo. The Texans made a concerted effort to get him the ball Sunday, including the screen that he took for a touchdown. His 11 targets were a team high, and he received one-on-one coverage most of the game with the Bears focused on stopping DeAndre Hopkins. Fuller has clearly established himself as the second target to Hopkins, and Brock Osweiler has a big enough arm to get him the ball downfield. FAAB: $8-$12

Secondary Targets

Tyrell Williams, SD - The loss of Keenan Allen is nothing short of brutal considering he only played eight games last season and was on pace for more than 1,400 receiving yards. Allen was ruled out for the rest of the season Monday with a torn ACL, putting Travis Benjamin into the role of the No. 1 wide receiver. The biggest uptick in fantasy value should be to Williams, who appears poised to assume the No. 2 role. Williams had two catches for 71 yards (five targets), and it seems the Chargers are higher on him than Dontrelle Inman. Williams, at 6-foot-3, 215, makes for a better red-zone target than Benjamin and should see plenty of targets from Phillip Rivers. FAAB: $4-$8

Eli Rogers, PIT - Rogers missed all last season with a foot injury but showed no ill effects Monday night. Rogers looked comfortable playing in the slot, and despite being listed on the depth chart behind guys like Markus Wheaton and Sammie Coates, he received the most targets of any receiver not named Antonio Brown for the Steelers. Wheaton was ruled out Monday night with a shoulder injury, though it isn't considered serious. His return will probably put a hit on Rogers' fantasy value. That said, the Steelers run a lot of three-WR sets and like using Rogers out of the slot. FAAB: $3-$6

Hail Mary

Quincy Enunwa, NYJ - The Jets may have found their third receiving option behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker as Enunwa hauled in seven catches for 56 yards and scored a touchdown on eight targets. Enunwa appears to have the trust of Ryan Fitzpatrick and will see soft coverage lining up with Decker and Marshall. Those two typically will dominate the targets each week but now and again Enunwa will have a game like Sunday. It's just tough to see him showing consistency each week. FAAB: $1-$2

TIGHT END

Secondary Targets

Kyle Rudolph, MIN - Rudolph had four catches for 65 yards Sunday, numbers that don't exactly jump off the page. However, he was targeted eight times by Shaun Hill as the Minnesota offense was conservative in the passing game. That approach should continue even after Sam Bradford takes over as the starter, and it's easy to forget that Rudolph has a season of nine touchdowns under his belt. While he's probably not a No. 1 tight end option type he'll have value in leagues that start two tight ends. FAAB: $2-$4

Jack Doyle, IND - Doyle came into Sunday's game with three career touchdowns in his first three season and added two more to that total. He's primarily been used as a blocker throughout his career, though the loss of Coby Fleener should mean more work as a receiver this season considering how many two-tight end sets the Colts run. This is really a case of him being relevant due to being in a high-powered offense over him being a special athlete/talent. Look for him to find the end zone on occasion but temper expectations for receptions and yardage. FAAB: $2-$4
