Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Chris Archer, TB at CWS ($42): Thursday's slate lacks a top-flight ace, and there's nothing wrong with rolling with Johnny Cueto ($56), the day's highest-priced option, as he's not cost prohibitive. But if you're looking to save some coin, Archer offers a great floor with some upside. You'd have to go back to July 8 to find an outing when he failed to score less than 13 fantasy points, and he's gone for at least 18 in all but one of those outings while six times hitting at least 27. That stability paired with an OPS of .719 and .150 ISO against righties from the White Sox leave Archer with the makings for a solid start.

Ariel Miranda, SEA vs. OAK ($30): Miranda has scored at least 24.0 fantasy points in three of his last four starts, thanks in large part to being the winning pitcher. That's what you're chasing in this outing, as the Mariners are two games out of a wild card spot and need a strong performance. He's allowed three runs or fewer in four straight and in nine of his last 10, and given the Athletic's .148 ISO and .299 wOBP against lefties, there's reason to believe Miranda can best A's starter Kendall Graveman, who has allowed 15 runs over his last three starts.

CATCHER

Gary Sanchez, NYY vs. BOS ($21): It may be hard to give back the perceived savings at pitcher on a catcher, especially one that has just one hit in his last five games, but Sanchez has an impressive .369 wOBP and .392 ISO against left-handed pitching. In a limited sample size (52 at-bats), Red Sox starter Henry Owens has allowed five home runs to right handed bats, and he has a 7.79 ERA over 17.1 innings total, making him a great option to stack against.

FIRST BASE

Kennys Vargas, MIN at KC ($10): Vargas has cooled off considerably since a decent start to September, as he has just three hits since September 16. But he's had great success against lefties, owning a robust .560 wOBP, .458 ISO and 50.0 percent hard hit rate. He'll square off with Royals' lefty Danny Duffy, who is limping to the finish with a 5.46 ERA this month.

SECOND BASE

Robinson Cano, SEA vs. OAK ($18): Cano checks in $6 less than top-priced Brian Dozier, and he has a much safer floor, as Dozier's power is offset by the fact he has just two hits in his last six games (27 at-bats). Cano has a .932 OPS against righties with 24 of his 35 homers coming against them. He's gone 12 for his last 26, including six extra-base hits while scoring eight times.

THIRD BASE

Todd Frazier, CWS vs. TB ($20): While obviously not ideal to use a prime bat going against a suggested pitcher, Frazier is too hot to ignore. He extended his hitting streak to 12 games Wednesday, and he has six home runs, seven doubles and 14 RBI in 95 September at-bats.

SHORTSTOP

Didi Gregorius, NYY vs. BOS ($10): Gregorius has gone deep twice in his last four games and offers a cheap buy in against the aforementioned Henry Owens. He's hit lefties at a better clip (.324 batting average compared to .263 against righties) including a three-hit outing against David Price just two days ago. He'll be the path less travelled with names like Francisco Lindor just $2 more expensive.

OUTFIELD

Cameron Maybin, DET vs. CLE ($18): The Tigers boast three of the top-13 highest-priced outfielders, and Maybin appears to be the safest, albeit with a limited floor due to a lack of power. He's scored double-digit fantasy points in seven of his last nine games, and faces a rookie pitcher in Ryan Merritt, who has just 6.1 Major League innings under his belt, and surrendered a run and two hits in 0.2 innings in his only road appearance.

Jayson Werth, WAS vs. ARZ ($13): Werth's splits based on pitcher handedness are impossible to ignore, as he has a .436 wOBP, .303 ISO and 1.043 OPS against southpaws compared to a .298/.138/.675 line against righties. He offers solid upside against Robbie Ray, who has allowed 13 runs over his last 14.1 innings.

Michael Saunders, TOR vs. BAL ($10): Saunders' left-handed bat has actually hit left-handers better this season, but has an inviting opportunity against the O's Ubaldo Jimenez, who has allowed 15 runs and four long balls in 14.1 innings against the Blue Jays this season. It's a small sample size, but Saunders has taken Jimenez deep four times and has nine hits and nine RBI in 19 at-bats, making him an ideal tournament gamble.
