Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wild-Card Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wild-Card Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

The Yahoo daily MLB game pairs each league's wild-card game for one contest running Tuesday and Wednesday. Fortunately, there are a number of good values.

PITCHER

Noah Syndergaard, NYM vs. SF ($55): Syndergaard turned in three performances of more than 30 fantasy points in three of his last six starts of the season and tallied 36 fantasy points against this same Giants squad the last time he faced them, on Aug. 21. He had a solid 2.83 ERA and outstanding .274 wOBA allowed over his last five starts overall, and allowed just a .159 average to the Giants this season over 13.2 innings.

Marcus Stroman, TOR vs. BAL ($31): Neither Stroman or his opponent Chris Tillman are perfect candidates by any means, but Stroman gets the call based on the home matchup and his late-season momentum. The young right-hander generated a solid 3.40 ERA over his last six starts, with four quality starts. He held his own over seven innings in his last start of the season against this same squad, and although the Orioles figure to break through some against him, he shapes up as a solid value play in the winner-take-all matchup.

CATCHER

Rene Rivera, NYM vs. SF ($7):  Rivera represents a great way to differentiate oneself and save some cash in the process in tournaments. He's actually managed five RBI against Madison Bumgarner in just three career at-bats against the lefty, and tallied a .314 average, .400 wOBA, and .200 ISO against southpaws, along with a 46.7 percent hard-contact rate against them at Citi Field. Bumgarner gave up 22 homers to right-handed hitters this season, with 17 on the road.

FIRST BASE

Edwin Encarnacion, TOR vs. BAL ($21) Encarnacion blasted 33 of his 42 homers this season off right-handers, amassed a .392 wOBA at Rogers Centre, and a .395 wOBA when facing righties there, while also tallying a 38.3 percent hard-contact rate. Chris Tillman gave up a .319 wOBA to right-handed hitters, along with 11 homers, while also surrendering three doubles, three homers and five RBI to Encarnacion in past encounters.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Schoop, BAL at TOR ($9): As mentioned, Marcus Stroman is certainly not going to be perfect against a potent Orioles lineup, and Schoop is just the value play to deploy against him. He brings considerable upside as evidenced most recently by his 26-fantasy point effort against the Yankees on Sept. 30, and blasted 20 homers this season off right-handed pitchers. He managed a .329 wOBA against that handedness, while Stroman gave up a 32.2 percent hard contact rate to righties at Rogers Centre.

THIRD BASE

Josh Donaldson, TOR vs. BAL ($23): The slugging third baseman is another potent bat to trout out against Chris Tillman. Donaldson decimated righties to the tune of a .405 wOBA and .272 ISO this season, along with a 41 percent hard-contact rate, while also posting a .420 wOBA overall at Rogers Centre.

SHORTSTOP

Asdrubal Cabrera, NYM vs. SF ($17): The switch-hitting Cabrera checks in with a .356 wOBA against lefties, and a .396 figure when facing them at Citi Field, along with a 20 percent HR/FB rate and 42.2 percent hard-contact rate. Those numbers make him a sneaky play against Bumgarner, whose vulnerability to giving up the long ball to right-handed hitters were detailed earlier.

OUTFIELD

Mark Trumbo ($18) - Trumbo owns a .455 average (5-for-11) against Marcus Stroman, and a .391 wOBA, .300 ISO and 37 homers on the season against right-handed pitching. He also closed out the season with a six-game hitting streak and double-digit fantasy points in three of those contests.

Yoenis Cespedes ($15) - Cespedes is another powerful Mets bat to utilize against Madison Bumgarner, considering his .447 wOBA against lefties at Citi Field, which he complements with an absurd 30 percent HR/FB rate and 61.1 percent hard contact rate. Given those numbers, Bumgarner's propensity for giving up the long ball to right-handed hitters could particularly cost him against the bargain-priced slugger.

Kevin Pillar ($11) - Pillar represents a sneaky value-based pivot from some of the more popular plays on the Blue Jays lineup and offers the added bonus of a .348/.333/.783 line against Chris Tillman that includes three homers and six RBI over 23 career at-bats. Pillar also sports an impressive .334 wOBA against right-handed pitching at Rogers Centre, furthering his case Tuesday.
