Yahoo DFS Baseball: Saturday Picks

PITCHER

Clayton Kershaw, LAD at COL ($52): It's always a dangerous proposition taking the visiting pitcher at Coors field, but if you are going to do so, it should be early in the season and it should be a top-tier pitcher. Kershaw certainly qualifies, and he's actually fared pretty well at Coors Field over the past three years, posting a 2.84 ERA over four starts. The Rockies are a dangerous squad, but they often run in streaks and early in the season, they've yet to find their groove. Regardless of how many runs he surrenders, he's going to get strikeoutsm as Colorado finished in the bottom 10 last season in K% versus lefties.

Kyle Hendricks, CHC at MIL ($50): Hendricks had an impressive 2016 season, and while he was better at home, he gets a favorable matchup against the Brewers, who ranked last in K% versus righties last season and had a bottom-10 wOBA. There are a lot of high-priced options on the slate, but Hendricks is in line for a lot of strikeouts and a win.

CATCHER

Buster Posey, SF at AZ ($17): Posey is off to a bit of a slow start, but after a scheduled day off Friday, he should be ready to go against Jhoulys Chacin. After a down-year, Chacin could have used a solid start to the 2017 season, but the exact opposite happened, as he surrendered nine runs in less than four innings and now he faces a strong Giants lineup. Posey looks to be one of many Giants that will take advantage of Chacin, as he has nine hits in 19 career at-bats. It's not a huge sample size, but this is really about Chacin's inability to get hitters out.

FIRST BASE

Brandon Belt, SF at SD ($16): If it seems like the Giants have been all over the recommendations lists this season, that's because they seem to have a great matchup nearly every game. As mentioned above, they've got another peach in this game. While Posey's has the most success against Chacin, Belt looks like the best statistical matchup, as he finished last season with a .370 wOBA versus lefties, which was the highest on the team last year.

SECOND BASE

Daniel Murphy, WAS at PHI ($19): Second base is the most difficult position on this slate. Outside of Joe Panik and his enticing matchup, I don't really like much. Murphy looks like the best of a bunch of mediocre options. He's facing Aaron Nola, who posted a 4.78 ERA last season and is likely to get off to a poor start this year as he faces one of the best lineups in baseball. Smack dab in the middle of that lineup is Murphy, who finished fourth in wOBA against righties last season.

THIRD BASE

Kris Bryant, CHC at MIL ($19): Bryant is off to a slow start this season, but there's little doubt that he will turn it around soon. Saturday looks like a great spot for a breakout, as Bryant crushed lefties last season and Tommy Milone isn't exactly Cy Young-caliber. Bryant finished last season with a .438 wOBA against lefties, good enough for ninth-best in the league. Meanwhile, Milone posted a 5.71 ERA last season and is already off to a rough start this year.

SHORTSTOP

Eduardo Escobar, MN at CHW ($10): With all the pricey pitching options, you'll need to find a few sleepers. As is often the case with sleepers, the matchups aren't great, but there's something there that looks appealing. There are a couple things working in Escobar's favor: first, Miguel Gonzalez is better against righties than lefties in nearly all statistical categories; and second, Escobar is better from the left side of the plate. It's not much, but Escobar is dirt cheap and the matchup is in his favor.

OUTFIELD

Nomar Mazara, TEX vs. OAK ($20): Mazara is off to an incredible start this season, with nine hits and nine RBI through the first four games. He now faces Kendall Graveman, who not only struggled to get lefties out last season, but was much worse on the road, posting an ERA nearly one-point higher than at home. Mazara's wOBA was .093 better against righties last season, which means the hot start is likely to continue.

Christian Yelich, FLA at NYM ($16): The Mets send righty Robert Gsellman to the mound, which works out well for Yelich, who posted a .386 wOBA against right-handed pitching last year, good for 25th in the majors. Yelich is off to a slow start this season, but he gets a Mets righty not named Syndergaard, deGrom or Harvey, so there's a good chance he gets on track.

Max Kepler, MN at CHW ($14): As noted above, Miguel Gonzalez struggled to get lefties out last season, with his 4.96 xFIP ranking in the bottom 25 among pitchers who threw at least 50 innings. Kepler is one of a few Twins who should be able to take advantage of Gonzalez's deficiencies, as he hit 15 of his 17 homers off righties last season and his wOBA was .073 points higher.
