FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Carlos Martinez, STL vs. CIN ($9,200): With no shortage of aces Sunday, fantasy managers have plenty of choices but must also choose wisely. Martinez appears to offer the perfect blend of stability and upside at somewhat of a discount. He earned 56 fantasy points in his first start despite a no decision, striking out 10 in 7.1 shutout innings. He's posted a 2.81 ERA over 41.2 innings against the Reds over the past three seasons, fanning 44, and the Reds have been held to three or fewer runs in three of their first five outings.

CATCHER

J.T. Realmuto, MIA at WAS ($2,600): There are rare instances in daily fantasy baseball when you play hot hands with no regard to advanced metrics. This is one of those times. Realmuto's price has only increased $300 since last week despite going 9 of 17 with two homers and five RBI. He's been so good, Miami has moved him to the top of the lineup, and at his still limited price, he's worth a look even against Mets' ace Noah Syndergaard.

FIRST BASE

Anthony Rizzo, CHC at MIL ($4,100): Despite being the second highest-priced at his premium position, Rizzo enters Sunday without a home run or RBI. Maybe he'll be overlooked in a slate without a clear top hitter worth paying for thanks to the numerous top starters on the bump. Brewers starter Zach Davies allowed six runs in 4.1 innings to open the year, allowing 13 baserunners, and the .330 wOBA and 10 homers across 78.0 to lefties last year could allow Rizzo a breakout performance.

SECOND BASE

Jose Altuve, HOU vs. KAN ($3,600): This looks like a solid contrarian play given Altuve's still hefty price compared to his 3 for 21 start. The Astros have a streamable lineup Sunday against righty Nathan Karns, who was surprisingly more vulnerable to right handed hitters, allowing a .375 wOBA compared to .282 against lefties last year. Meanwhile, Altuve had a .395 wOBA against righties a year ago.

THIRD BASE

Alex Bregman, HOU vs. KAN ($3,000): Dating back to last June, Royals' starter Nathan Karns has allowed 36 runs over his last 37.1 innings. Bregman provides a nice bargain price at a premium position, both in your lineup and atop the Astro's order, as he posted a .344 wOBA and .228 ISO against righties last year.

SHORTSTOP

Elvis Andrus, TEX vs. OAK ($2,900): Andrus has two multi-hit games in the first five contests, and among Rangers hitters with at least 100 at-bats last year, he led the team with a .345 wOBA against lefties. That should help him score against A's starter Sean Manaea and the .322 wOBA allowed last season.

OUTFIELD

Yasiel Puig, LOS at COL ($3,800): Somewhat surprisingly, Puig has a .362 wOBA against lefties and a .366 wOBA against righties in his career. His walk rate is up nearly two percent and his strikeout rate down over three percent against southpaws, which seems to set him up for further success at Coors Field on Sunday against Tyler Anderson, who allowed eight home runs over 59.1 innings at home to righties last year.

Adam Jones, BAL vs. NYY ($3,700): Jones has curiously been more successful in his career against right handers, with the exception of Sunday's lefty starter CC Sabathia. He's 21 of 70 against the veteran in his career with five homers, four doubles and 15 RBI. He's hit safely in every game to open the season and enjoyed a .318 wOBA against southpaws last year.

Dexter Fowler, STL vs. CIN ($3,200): Fowler has a nice .380 wOBA against righties a year ago, which should play nicely against Sunday starter Scott Feldman and the .377 wOBA he allowed last year. This contest has one of the biggest pitching mismatches of the day, and Fowler hitting atop the lineup should bode well as the Cardinals jump out to an expected lead.
