FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Dylan Bundy, BAL vs. TAM ($8,100): I'm a big fan of paying for Noah Syndergaard ($11,500) in this slate, and if you're playing the all-day session and not just the evening games, maybe Jose Quintana ($8,500) is worth considering against a woeful Royals offense, but the bargain options Wednesday come down to Bundy, and Luis Severino ($8,700). Both figure to be reasonably popular picks, but I'll take the cheaper of the two in Bundy. He hasn't allowed a run over his last two starts, a span of 13.1 innings, striking out nine in that span. The Rays' offense counters with a unit that has a wOBA of .322 against righties and a 26.0 percent strikeout rate.

Catcher

Tony Wolters, COL vs. WAS ($3,200): Due to some hot bats, catcher pricing appears to be a little on the rise, and Wolters checks in tied for the second-highest priced option at a non-premium position. The flip side is he offers a cheap buy in to a game at Coors Field and sports a respectable .331 wOBA against righties since 2016, a number that's risen to .363 in the early part of 2017.

First Base

Ryan Zimmerman, WAS at COL ($4,200): This game comes with a total 2.5 runs higher than any other on the docket, which is leading to some inflated prices. And Bryce Harper ($5,200) has immense upside and favorable matchup statistics. But looking towards Zimmerman at an arguably uncomfortable price could be a nice contrarian option. He's homered in two straight and in four of his last six entering Tuesday, and has a .448 wOBA and 1.053 OPS against righties in 61 plate appearances this season.

Second Base

Dee Gordon, MIA at PHI ($3,300): Opposing managers appear to be exploiting Phillies starter Vince Velasquez's inability to retire lefties. He's faced 44 left-handed bats compared to 25 righties in three starts, and the results aren't ideal, allowing a .469 wOBA. Gordon owns a .327 wOBA against righties compared to a .185 wOBA against lefties, giving him a chance to set the table for the 13th-ranked run-scoring offense.

Third Base

Jedd Gyorko, STL vs. TOR ($3,000): Gorko has six hits (four for extra bases) in his last three games entering Tuesday. He's posted a team-leading .363 wOBA against right-handers since the start of 2016 and comes at a very nice price for a cleanup hitter. Jays starter Mat Latos had a 4.89 ERA over 70.0 innings last season and also allowed a .356 wOBA to righties last year, making him well worth picking on. If you're feeling lucky, San Francisco's Christian Arroyo ($2,400) could be a worthwhile gamble against lefty Alex Wood, too.

Shortstop

Jorge Polanco, MIN at TEX ($2,700): The switch-hitting Polanco is statistically much better against left-handed pitchers, owning a career .381 wOBA against southpaws compared to .301 against right-handers, splits that have risen in limited action this season (.416 vs. .255). It's earned him a spot in the heart of the order, giving him a chance at success against ace Cole Hamels, whose strikeout rate is down to a career-low 4.85 per nine innings after sitting at 8.97 a season ago.

Outfield

Marcell Ozuna, MIA at PHI ($3,600): Ozuna's production has been borderline top-tier, but his price remains a notch below the top outfielders. He's posted a .408 wOBA and .351 ISO against righties in 61 plate appearances, and faces the aforementioned Velasquez, who has allowed four home runs and 12 runs in 15.0 innings to date.

Hunter Pence, SFG vs. LAD ($3,400): Over the past year-plus, Pence owns a .363 wOBA, .225 ISO and .848 OPS against lefties. He's simply a safe pick with moderate upside at a fair price. Facing lefty Alex Wood, who allowed four runs in 4.2 innings in his lone start this year, certainly doesn't hurt.

Seth Smith, BAL vs. TAM ($2,800): The O's offer some cheap left-handed bats with statistical success against right-handers, so keep an eye on their lineup Wednesday. Assuming Smith starts, he should slot into the leadoff spot against Alex Cobb, who is allowing a .468 wOBA to lefties this year, on the heels of allowing a .502 wOBA in limited work last year. Smith counters with .444 wOBA against righties.
