FanDuel MLB: Friday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Friday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Clayton Kershaw, LAD at COL ($9,600): If Kershaw was at full price, I would hesitate in this spot, but he's getting the Coors Field discount and with that discount, he's tough to pass on. Kershaw is averaging 45.7 fantasy points per game, which is nearly 5x value at this price. To put that in perspective, it would be similar to Mike Trout averaging 25 points per game. If Kershaw were significantly worse at Coors Field than other parks, I might try harder to find a different pitcher, but his ERA at Coors is just 2.81. Higher than normal, yes, but still good. Only two current starters in the Rockies' lineup have had any kind of success against Kershaw in his career, and the rest have terrible numbers against him. If you want to go cheaper, Chris Tillman is an interesting option coming off a good opening start last week.

CATCHER

Alex Avila, DET at LAA ($2,900): Even though he hasn't had a monster game in over a week, Avila is still putting up some decent numbers. That's quite the improvement on the Avila of the past few years, as prior to this season, he was all or nothing. With that in mind, he makes for a nice play against the right-handed Matt Shoemaker, who is struggling this year. Avila primarily hits against righties and does it well with a .505 wOBA, which is second in all of baseball in 2017.

FIRST BASE

Cody Bellinger, LAD at COL ($4,000): Bellinger was a highly-touted prospect that is actually living up to expectations. Through 14 games, Bellinger is averaging 17.3 fantasy points per game. That's Bryce Harper's neighborhood, one meant for elite hitters. While Bellinger is likely to regress a bit throughout the season, it likely won't happen this weekend in Colorado. Bellinger and the rest of the Dodgers get a nice matchup against a struggling Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood has surrendered four or more runs in four of his past six starts.

SECOND BASE

Brandon Drury, AZ vs. PIT ($3,100): It's easy to get lost among all the big bats in the Diamondbacks lineup, but Drury should be getting some attention with the way he's hit this season. Drury is averaging 8.6 fantasy points per game and his number over his past eight starts is closer to 12. Drury gets a favorable matchup against Tyler Glasnow, who has surrendered three or more runs in five of his six starts this season. Drury has hit righties well this season to the tune of a .406 wOBA, which makes him a solid lower-priced option.

SHORTSTOP

Jose Ramirez, CLE vs. MN ($3,600): Ramirez looks like a decent play because his price has come down a bit over the past week and he has a good track record against Ervin Santana. Santana is off to a great start this season, but he finally showed some cracks in the armor in his most recent outing, so maybe this is the start of the inevitable regression. Ramirez has nine hits in just 16 career at-bats against Santana.

THIRD BASE

Justin Turner, LAD vs. PIT ($4,200): With Tyler Chatwood in the midst of a terrible stretch, we'll want to find at least two Dodgers to put into our lineup. Turner should be at the top of the list because of his success against righties this season. Turner has a .433 wOBA against righties this season, which puts him in the top-20 in all of baseball. The reason Turner matches up so well is that Chatwood has struggled more with righties this season than lefties, as opposing righties have posted a .355 wOBA against him.

OUTFIELD

Bryce Harper, WAS vs. PHI ($4,900): If you are using Kershaw, you obviously can't stack Dodgers and find room for Harper, but his placement on this list is more of a reminder that the Nationals are again a good stacking option — if you can afford it. The Nats will face Nick Pivetta, who in two starts this season, has surrendered six runs. Pivetta has struggled more with righties than lefties thus far, but we are talking about just 10 innings, so the natural struggle against lefties is probably imminent. Harper has a .497 wOBA against righties this season, so he's obviously a strong option against the rookie Pivetta.

Tommy Pham, STL vs. CHC ($2,900):Tommy Pham isn't going to average 21.2 fantasy points per game over the entire season, but as long as his salary is under $3k and he's not facing an elite pitcher, I try to find him a spot. Pham's price has come up over the past week, but it's still too low if he's going to produce anywhere near the level he has over his first six games. Pham had a monster game against Atlanta on May 7 that inflated his average, but he's really only had one poor outing in six games. The second part of the equation is the opposing starter, and in this case it's Eddie Butler, who's never really fared well at the major-league level.

Colby Rasmus, TB at BOS ($3,200): Rasmus was out for nearly a month to start the season, but since his return, he's been on fire. Rasmus has averaged 23.4 fantasy points per game over his past five and if he were to cut that number in half, he'd still be a bargain at this price. I'm not overly thrilled with the matchup against Rick Porcello, but the most important factor is that Porcello is a righty and Rasmus has been solid against righties this season with a .426 wOBA.
