DraftKings MLB: Saturday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Saturday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Trevor Cahill, SD at CWS ($9,300): Instead of taking the easy route with Chris Sale ($13,100), I'm going with a couple of cheaper pitchers Saturday. Cahill isn't going deep into games, but he's had at least six strikeouts in every start this season and allowed only four hits total in his last two starts. With those strikeouts something to fall back on, Cahill also faces the worst team in the league against righties. The White Sox have a .274 wOBA and sixth worst 24.0 percent K rate against them.

Nathan Karns, KC vs. BAL ($7,900): Hoping to bank on some more strikeouts, Karns has turned things around since a slow start and has 17 Ks in his last two starts. This is one of the better value plays of the day against the Orioles, who have a mediocre .319 wOBA against righties and Camden Yards doesn't help that.

CATCHER

Martin Maldonado, LAA vs. DET ($2,400): The price may seem cheap, but Maldonado is a good route to go. He's been much better against lefties this season with a .535 wOBA and .263 ISO, although in only 19 at-bats. But combine that with Daniel Norris, who hasn't looked good against either side of the plate and has just an 18.3 percent K rate against righties, and Maldonado makes sense. Norris has hit five innings only once in his last four starts.

FIRST BASE

Alex Avila, DET at LAA ($3,600): The price is a bit higher than I'd like for Avila, but the matchup is worth it. Avila has an early .505 wOBA and .311 ISO against righties and his 25.9 percent K rate may not be a factor. Ricky Nolasco has a poor 14.5 percent K rate and 5.13 xFIP so far against lefties.

SECOND BASE

Brandon Drury, ARI vs. PIT ($3,800): This is a decent price for Drury, who has been much better in righty-righty matchups as seen in his .402 wOBA and much smaller 17.9 percent K rate. Trevor Williams has only pitched 14.2 innings this season, but he's been smoked against the right side of the plate, allowing a .492 wOBA and 5.96 xFIP.

THIRD BASE

Anthony Rendon, WAS vs. PHI ($4,400): Rendon has been better against lefties, but I'm banking that he'll do just fine in this matchup, and at the least he has a .333 wOBA against righties. The Nationals face Nick Pivetta, who gave up six runs in his first two career starts to go with four homers. The big thing is that all of that damage came against righties and that's where Rendon comes in.

SHORTSTOP

Zack Cozart, CIN at SF ($3,700): Cozart has been pure consistency in the past week-plus with 12 hits in his last eight games prior to Friday night. He's been better against lefties with a .460 wOBA and .304 ISO and that'll come in handy against Matt Moore, who hasn't been too hot lately. Moore has given up 12 runs and allowed 13 hits in his last 8.2 innings pitched and he's been equally bad against both sides of the plate (4.67 xFIP, .342 wOBA against righties).

OUTFIELD

Jay Bruce, NYM at MIL ($4,800): The only time to use Bruce is against righties, and this is one of those times. He has a .470 wOBA and .393 ISO, which gets boosted against Zach Davies. The right-hander has looked better since a slow start, but he's still hard to trust with a 4.66 xFIP against lefties.

Yasmany Tomas, ARI vs. PIT ($4,300): This is another great righty-righty matchup in the same game. Tomas has roped righties for a .420 wOBA and .343 ISO and has a K rate 15 points lower (21.9 percent) than against lefties (36.4 percent). Even so, Williams has just a 15.6 percent K rate of his own against righties, so that shouldn't be a major worry.

Mookie Betts, BOS vs. TB ($5,100): Not many have been better than Betts in the past couple weeks and his struggles against lefties aren't going to stop me from using him. Either way, he's had just 17 at-bats against lefties so far with eight of them coming at Fenway. As for Blake Snell, he hasn't made it further than five innings since his first start. Last time out, he was lit up by the struggling Royals for 10 hits and four runs. Snell has allowed a .348 wOBA to go with a 5.71 xFIP and 15.9 percent K rate against righties.
